Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 actor Karen Gillan admitted that she and co-star Pom Klementieff couldn’t hold back tears the first time they read the script for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe film.
“We read it in the same room together, and then looked at each other and we were in floods of tears,” Gillan, who portrays Nebula in the MCU, told Yahoo! Movies. While the actor didn’t reveal what exactly in the script made her cry, she teased that the film’s plot is “so emotional.”
“You’re learning more about existing characters and on a deeper level,” Gillan continued. “I’m really excited at exploring Nebula, post-Thanos.”
While the plot of the upcoming Guardians film is being kept under wraps, Dave Bautista previously confirmed that the film will mark his last appearance as Drax. Back in May, Bautista explained, “We work in trilogies, and James Gunn has already announced that it’s his last film, and when James is done, I’m done.” The 54-year-old actor also revealed at that time that “the shirtless thing is getting harder and harder for me.”
Although Marvel and Guardians director James Gunn have yet to reveal how Drax’s story will end, some fans believe that the logo for Vol. 3 confirms Drax will be killed off. Specifically, Instagram user @superheroes.shelter shared a meme over the summer that showed the title cards for each of the three Guardians movies and pointed out a pattern suggesting that the color of the font used may indicate the death that occurred in each film.
In the original movie, the lettering is colored a marbled brown, which resembles Groot’s wood. Meanwhile, the logo for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was blue, like Yondu’s skin, and the phrase “Vol. 2” was written in a bright red that matched Yondu’s fin. If the trend continued, the gray and red colors used in the logo for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 could represent Drax’s skin color and tattoos.
As for Gillan’s future in the MCU, the actor recently said she’s “emotionally invested” in Nebula, and isn’t ready to part with the character any time soon. “I would love to continue the journey of the character,” she said at the time. “I don’t know what that would really look like without James [Gunn] or Dave [Bautista], but I really like playing her, so I’m not eager to finish.”
Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Elizabeth Debicki. The film arrives in theaters May 5, 2023.
