Team Rocket may be the antagonists of the Pokémon anime, but that doesn’t mean we can’t learn anything from them. Whether intentional or not, the clumsy and blundering trio has taught us lessons about things like creativity, friendship, and never giving up.
There’s more to Jessie, James, and Meowth than just being members of a nefarious organization in pursuit of evil, and while it’s often a case of what not to do, the three have given us an education in some of the dark arts, but also some of the more noble aspects of life, of which one wouldn’t necessarily learn in school.
10 Be Creative In Your Work
The Team Rocket trio has shown great creativity in their pursuit of Pokémon, crafting a number of gadgets, mechas, and structures, designing traps, and donning a number of disguises over the years, with some working better than others.
The number of schemes is too many to count, and while most of them have ended in failure, some of them have brought Team Rocket tantalizingly close to their ultimate goal of catching Ash’s Pikachu.
9 Have Confidence In The Con
The Team Rocket trio has been able to fool people wherever they’ve gone. Usually, when they are inevitably rumbled, it’s because they’ve thrown off their disguises to recite their team motto. It takes a great deal of confidence to fool others into believing you’re something you’re not.
While they may not use their confidence for the honorable of pursuits, they show us that you can be anyone you want to be if you just believe.
8 It’s Best To Go For Quality Over Quantity
Team Rocket could easily go after lesser Pokémon than Pikachu, but they know just how special it is, so they pour all their efforts into trying to capture Ash’s unique Pokémon and best friend.
Like wine connoisseurs searching for a particularly rare bottle, they have an appreciation for Pikachu that shows us that it’s worth the time and effort to try for one great thing rather than settling for multiple good things.
7 Keep Trying To Achieve Your Goal No Matter What
What could be a page taken out of the Ash Ketchum book of training tips can be applied to Team Rocket. No matter how many times they’ve been rebuffed in their attempts to capture Pikachu and other Pokémon, the Team Rocket trio keeps coming back and trying again.
Their industry and persistence are nothing less than admirable. Team Rocket shows us that even if you get knocked back time and again, keep getting up and trying again.
6 Three Is Stronger Than One
The episode “Noodles Roamin’ Off” shows how each member of the Team Rocket trio is a black sheep. Jessie, James, and Meowth split up and try to make it on their own, with James going off in pursuit of a unique Metagross, Jessie becoming a Coordinator, and Meowth going to work at a noodle shop.
In the end, they realize that they’re much better off together than they are apart, demonstrating the value of friendship.
5 Think On Your Feet
Team Rocket are incredibly adept at thinking on their feet. How many times have they come across a situation and had to act quickly, lest their chance to snag a Pokémon pass them by?
It’s amazing how fast they can come up with a plan only moments after an opportunity presents itself. Of course, their hastiness has also cost them, for example when they bought a dubious machine from a Magikarp salesman in “Pokémon Evolution Machine,” but their quick thinking teaches us not to let an opportunity go to waste.
4 Get Bang For Your Buck
The Team Rocket trio is funded by Giovanni, their boss and head of Team Rocket, but the fact that they got pogo sticks while Butch and Cassidy got scooters says everything about how much clout they have.
Despite this, they are still able to construct elaborate machines and structures. Even if they end up exploding or getting blown over by a gust of wind, it shows what can be done on a small budget.
3 Help Others Whenever You Can
In “Fly Me To The Moon,” Meowth helped Orville, a Pidgey, fulfill its ambition of flying higher than any other Pokémon, and in “A Poached Ego,” Team Rocket saved a group of caged Pokémon from a poacher.
They also helped a Paras train so it could evolve in “The Problem With Paras,” and they took the fall for a Blissey that stole all the food from a Pokémon Center in “Ignorance Is Blissey.” They even helped Ash save the world in “Pokémon the Movie: 2000.” Team Rocket leads by example and shows that it’s important to help others.
2 Don’t Let Your Ego Get In The Way
Jessie, James, and Meowth all have big personalities and egos. The trio’s plans often go awry, and a good deal of the time it’s because they’ve let their egos get in the way, rumbling themselves by throwing their disguises off and revealing their identities for a few seconds in the spotlight.
If it hadn’t been for their flamboyance they probably would have been far more successful than they have been.
1 Know When To Call It A Day
Watching Team Rocket fail to steal Pikachu over and over again teaches us that we should know when to quit. If you keep getting thwarted, there comes a time when you need to say enough is enough. Their persistence is admirable, but if you’re not getting results, you need to be able to see what you’re doing wrong.
This is a lesson the Team Rocket trio hasn’t yet learned, but it’s one they’ve indirectly taught us.
