After months of anticipation, Spider-Man: No Way Home has been given an official release date and a teaser teaser which did not disappoint. The teaser revealed a distraught Peter dealing with his public unmasking by Mysterio in Far From Home. With the public now knowing who’s behind the mask, Peter must make the ultimate sacrifice by asking Dr. Strange to erase everyone’s memories of his identity as Spider-Man.
The story, although intriguing, isn’t exactly original as many long-time comic fans will know. From the looks of it, No Way Home will seemingly be the MCU’s re-interpretation of one of the most notorious and controversial Spider-Man stories ever written: Spider-Man: One More Day. Given how negatively received the story was, fans are now both eager and worried to see which elements from the story will make their way onto the big screen.
8 Everyone knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man
One of the most infamous scenes in all of Spider-Man history was him revealing his secret identity during the Civil War event. Thus, a significant cause for One More Day was that everyone knew who Spider-Man really was. The teaser for No Way Home indicates that the MCU will attempt to borrow this aspect from the comics.
With no more privacy or safety, Peter can’t keep up with being Spider-Man, as evident by the trailer. And the response he gets from the public isn’t what he expected. He becomes a pariah, a public enemy even, and has to live life as an outlaw who is constantly on the run. It’s the exact same plot point seen in the comics during the Civil War era of Spider-Man, except with a few minor changes.
7 Dr. Strange will make an appearance, just like he did in One More Day
In One More Day, Peter meets with Dr. Strange as a last-ditch effort to find a way of saving a dying Aunt May. He comes to the Sanctum Sanctorum to ask Dr. Strange for help, much like he does in the movie. The scene in the trailer where Peter asks Dr. Strange for a favor somewhat parallels this scene from the comics. Dr. Strange however will not be a complete carbon copy from the comics, as he will seemingly take on a much bigger role in the film.
From the teaser, MCU Dr. Strange looks to take on both the roles of Dr. Strange and Mephisto from One More Day, as he will be the one to erase everyone’s memories rather than Mephisto. With that said though, No Way Home could also align more with the One Moment in Time storyline, where Dr. Strange and Reed Richards were directly involved in erasing everyone’s memories of Peter’s secret identity. Regardless of his role, Strange’s appearance in the movie is enough to indicate that the MCU is looking to re-vamp the story.
6 Peter’s friends & family are being hunted down
The catalyst for One More Day was Aunt May being shot by a sniper at the end of Civil War. After Peter reveals his identity to the public, Aunt May, MJ, and Peter have to go into hiding, evading all of his former foes as well as Iron Man. They end up sheltering at a run down motel. Most of the subsequent Amazing issues resultingly focused on Peter and his allies trying to protect his family.
With MCU Peter’s identity exposed, his allies, friends, and family will once again become the target of some powerful villains and enemies, as it was in the comics. Peter then must do his best to protect everyone, except it won’t just be MJ and Aunt May this time.
5 Possible reappearance of Black Suit Spider-Man?
From various shots and stills of the teaser, it looks as though black suit Spider-Man will once again return to the big screens. In the teaser trailer, audiences can see a distraught Peter taking off what appears to be a black Spider-Man mask while donning the black Spider-Man suit in a cafeteria.
Although the black symbiote suit does not make an appearance in One More Day, Peter does wear the suit in the antecedent story, Back in Black. After Aunt May is shot, Peter abandons his classic suit and wears the black suit, symbolizing his thirst for revenge. No Way Home might allude to this specific event, thereby incorporating elements from Civil War, Back in Black, and One More Day. Peter donning the black suit might be a prelude to the final event.
4 The magical cauldron seen in the teaser looks similar to the cauldron seen in “One More Day” & its covers
A small and subtle indication that No Way Home is the MCU’s version of One More Day might be the magical bowl/cauldron Dr. Strange uses to cast the mind-erasing spell, as seen in the teaser. In the trailer, Dr. Strange is telling Peter of all the repercussions of the mind-erasing spell while pouring some orange goo into the bowl. This scene from film might be a visual allusion to the scene from the comics/covers of the One More Day story.
There are actually one or two panels from One More Day that showcase Dr. Strange talking to Peter and casting some sort of liquid spell from the bowl. The cover of Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #24 also features the same incantation bowl. Although a small detail, this might help to accentuate the connection between the comic storyline and the film.
3 Peter could be using magic behind Dr. Strange’s back
One quintessentially important part of the One More Day story is that Peter goes behind Dr. Strange’s back and tries to use magic to save Aunt May, albeit with time travel. As expected, the plan goes horribly wrong and eventually paves a path for Peter to make a deal with Mephisto.
One scene from the teaser might be indicating that this will be the case for the film. The scene also happens to be the thumbnail for the teaser trailer. Dr. Strange is astral punching Peter, mimicking the scene from the first Dr. Strange film. This might imply two things. First, Dr. Strange could be teaching Peter about magic, separating his astral form from his body. Or, Dr. Strange is punishing Peter for stealing the magic cube from the Sanctum Sanctorum. If Peter is in fact trying to steal a magical object in order to time travel, then it will be almost identical to that of One More Day.
2 A Farewell to MCU Spider-Man
The conclusion of One More Day ushered in a new era for Spider-Man. The title was partially rebooted and a new status quo was established in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Spider-Man was forever changed and the repercussions of Brand New Day can still be seen in the current title. Much like One More Day, No Way Home will likely conclude yet another era for Spider-Man.
At the moment, No Way Home will likely be Spider-Man’s final appearance in an MCU film before he goes back to Sony. And as of now, Tom Holland’s future as Spider-Man looks bleak as no further deals between the two companies are set to take place. Thus, in order to reset MCU Spider-Man, Marvel is rebooting the character through No Way Home, just like in One More Day.
1 Dissolution of MJ & Peter’s relationship
The most controversial aspect of One More Day was undoubtedly the dissolution of MJ and Peter’s marriage. MJ and Peter had been married since 1987, a whooping 20 years in real time. With the start of Brand New Day, Mephisto made it so that MJ and Peter were never married, and instead were only in a serious long-term relationship.
It looks as though MJ will have to be mind wiped like everyone else in No Way Home. Having MJ forget Spider-Man’s identity will inevitably erase all of her memories of him, thereby ending the relationship. And considering how much the previous film played up the relationship, Peter will likely have to sacrifice his life with MJ once again in this film.
