Episode two of What If…? showed fans something shocking yet delightful: T’Challa was able to convince Thanos not to go through with his plans of genocide. The Titan even decided to start a garden instead, and was slowly working on repairing his relationship with his daughter Nebula.
In Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame, the Avengers had little time to sit down with Thanos and attempt to talk things out with him. Things may have gone differently if they had this opportunity. Some Avengers would have a good chance of reforming the Titan, while others would only make matters significantly worse.
10 Could: T’Challa Shows Thanos That There Are Alternatives
T’Challa is the type of character who wants to help other people outside of Wakanda, as he knows that he and his people have so much to offer. As a Ravager, T’Challa was well-known and respected. He acted like Robin Hood, stealing things that could benefit planets in need. He is a man of action, and his actions showed Thanos that there is more than one way to help the universe. Thanos may still think he’s right, but he’s willing to try things T’Challa’s way, which is a vast improvement.
9 Could Not: Peter Quill Is Far Too Childish
Peter lacks the maturity required to talk down Thanos. He has a difficult time not insulting others during any sort of conversation, and is the type of person who would challenge someone to a dance-off even when it’s an inappropriate way of responding to a serious situation. He accomplishes things through a mixture of teamwork, skill, and most of all, extreme luck. Peter would fail to come up with a compelling argument to change Thanos’ views, and would be more likely to get on the Mad Titan’s nerves.
8 Could: Steve Rogers Has Optimism And A Good Heart
Steve Rogers is known as one of the best heroes Earth ever had. This is largely due to his personality, which hadn’t changed even after becoming a super soldier. He is compassionate, and has upstanding morals, always wanting to stick up for the little guy.
He is the type of person who would try any possible solution in order to fix a problem. Although Thanos claims that he has tried every solution, Steve would do everything in his power to find another one.
7 Could Not: Nebula’s Relationship With Her Father Is Too Poor
Nebula doesn’t have a good relationship with her father no matter who Star-Lord is. Thanos is the type of person who makes his children fight against each other, and replaces a large portion of Nebula’s body with robotic parts. Nebula is eager to please her father despite that, and most of all, fears him. Unfortunately, her words would never get through to him.
6 Could: Carol Danvers Has Experience Helping Dozens Of Planets
Like Star-Lord T’Challa, Carol has plenty of experience in helping a large variety of planets. Her job keeps her so busy that she has little time to devote to calls with the other Avengers. With this kind of experience, she would be able to think of alternatives to Thanos’ plan. He would respect her efforts to make a difference, as he hated the way his people idly stood by as they fell to ruin. Her powers would also prevent her from being intimidated by him, allowing them to talk as equals.
5 Could Not: Peter Parker Is Still A Relatively New Superhero
Peter Parker, despite fighting crime in quite a few different locations, can still be considered a friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. He doesn’t have the kind of fighting and negotiating experience that the first generation of Avengers do.
Despite having a huge intellect, he is still a high school boy with some naivete, allowing him to be tricked and manipulated at times.
4 Could: Tony Stark Has Thanos’ Respect
Tony Stark is nothing short of a genius, although he is stubborn and arrogant at times. His intelligence was complimented by Thanos, who said that they were both cursed with knowledge. If given a chance, Tony could have come up with a much better solution to solving the universe’s resource problem. After all, he has become used to working with others, often bouncing ideas off of similarly intelligent people like Bruce Banner. Tony is also very determined, working tirelessly on something when he is passionate enough about it.
3 Could Not: Thor Odinson Solves Problems Primarily Through Fighting
Until the events of Thor: Ragnarok, most of Thor’s conflicts were solved through fighting. However, his ability to speak to Groot proved that he paid attention to politics and foreign relations, and he showed a willingness to talk things out with others on multiple occasions. Assuming that Thor had a proper conversation with Thanos before he had a reason to hate the Titan, he still would not be able to convince Thanos to change his ways. After all, Thanos would not be impressed by his inability and unwillingness to rule, and the fact that Thor had to resort to destroying Asgard to stop his sister.
2 Could: Wanda Maximoff’s Chaos Magic Can Be A Huge Asset To The Universe
Wanda gained her enhanced abilities from an Infinity Stone, allowing her to create things as well as shape objects and people to her will. Her power is so vast that she could make a significant difference in the universe, helping Thanos to achieve his goals in a peaceful manner. If Thanos could have seen a vast realm of possibilities available through the use of only one stone before getting to Vision, he may have reconsidered his plans and been open to other options.
1 Could Not: Vision Wears The Very Stone Thanos Is After
Vision would be the absolute worst at talking down Thanos. After all, it is difficult to convince a starving wolf that it’s not hungry while holding a particularly large and juicy steak. The very stone empowering Vision would only be a source of temptation for Thanos. Regardless of Vision’s ability to speak logically and even eloquently, Thanos would be most likely to merely thank Vision for saving him the trip.
