James Gunn Denies Reports Bane Is in the Peacemaker Series | CBR

The Suicide Squad writer/director and Peacemaker producer James Gunn denied any rumors that Bane appears in the forthcoming HBO Max Peacemaker series.

“Sorry to say your second exclusive scoop is incorrect,” Gunn said on Twitter, in response to a blog called Movie Scope that claimed Bane would appear in the HBO Max series. “I don’t know what your first scoop was, but hopefully you’re batting 500, which isn’t bad.” He continued, “Also, I love Bane, & I’m not opposed to [Peacemaker] getting his ass kicked, so who knows what the future could bring.”

Film critic Grace Randolph also claimed that Bane is not “technically” in Peacemaker but appears for one scene at the end as a second season tease. Gunn also responded to this claim, saying, “That would, by my definition, mean he was technically in the show. He does not show up at the end or anywhere and has zero lines.”

“I’ve never lied to the fans about this stuff and I never will,” Gunn said.

While Bane is not likely to appear alongside John Cena’s Peacemaker in the series, Gunn has confirmed a cameo by one of the members of Task Force X. The director recently teased during the virtual The Suicide Squad watch party that one of John Cena’s The Suicide Squad co-stars will appear in the series. He confirmed the cast of Peacemaker would consist of “Peacemaker, Emilia Harcourt, John Economos and, well, heck maybe one more.” He did not offer any further details on the mystery guest star.

Season 1 of Peacemaker recently wrapped filming and is set to debut on HBO Max in 2022. Announced as a television series in 2020, Cena will reprise his The Suicide Squad role for the upcoming HBO Max series. “This guy is a loud, obnoxious, bro-ey douchebag,” Cena previously said about his character. “That sucks. But why? At what point did he become such a douchebag and what does that mean? There’s a lot to dive into there.”

When the series was first announced, Gunn also said that the series “is an opportunity to delve into current world issues through the lens of this superhero/supervillain/and world’s biggest douchebag.” He said, “I’m excited to expand The Suicide Squad and bring this character from the DC film universe to the full breadth of a series.”

Peacemaker premieres in January 2022, with or without an appearance from Bane. All episodes will be available to stream exclusively on HBO Max.
