The Advance Wars series of Nintendo games have been out of the limelight for a while now, but it’s finally coming back by way of a remake compilation. Considered one of the best games of all time, Advance Wars and its sequel Black Hole Rising are marching to the Nintendo Switch.
Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp features all the fun of the first two games while sprucing them up with upgraded graphics, animations and other features. This makes the now forgotten but once popular Nintendo series more easily available to those who want to relive Game Boy Advance era memories or newcomers to the series who’ve never even heard of the franchise before. Announced this summer, the game isn’t too far from its planned release, so here’s what gamers should know before Advance Wars drops a bomb on their Nintendo Switch this year.
What Is Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp?
As a remade compilation of the first two games, the storyline for Re-Boot Camp is the same as it was in the franchise’s initial entries. The plot of the first game spins out of its tutorial mode, featuring a war between various different colored nations. These countries include Orange Star, Blue Moon and Green Earth, all of whom have their own iconic commanding officers. Amid all of the fracas is the revelation that someone may be pulling the strings behind the scenes to orchestrate these Advance Wars.
The plot of the second game picks up where the first left off, with the countries of many colors teaming up to combat the Black Hole Army. Those worried about experiencing the horrors of war should be encouraged by the fact that the story and the characters themselves are all represented with a unique Nintendo charm that’s always bright and never too gritty.

When the game was announced, a trailer giving a first look at how the remake will be handled was also revealed. This trailer showcased the updated graphics engine and characters designs, with things still looking as fun and cartoony as ever. This is accentuated in many of the commanding officer attacks, which look like special move animations from an anime series. The 3D backgrounds are also more vivid than the ones in the Game Boy Advance versions of the titles, making the visceral action pop all the more vividly.
Beyond that, the basic gameplay looks to be much the same, as should be expected in a remake. The titles are turn-based strategy games, not unlike fellow Nintendo franchise Fire Emblem. The gameplay involves players traversing throughout a battlefield map and encountering enemy units, which leads to short skirmishes where units combat each other. These encounters don’t necessarily end with a unit being destroyed, and it depends on the gravity of a unit’s strengths and weaknesses. Units include tanks, helicopters and simple infantrymen, all of whom do a variety of damage. Whichever army defeats all of their enemy’s units wins, though there are sometimes other objectives, as well.
The HD collection was announced back in June as part of a Nintendo Direct event. It’s being handled by frequent Nintendo collaborator WayForward, who are most known for the equally as bright and cheery Shantae series. Like the original games, its single-player campaign will be bolstered by multiplayer battles, though there’s a major difference this time. Nintendo has confirmed that Re-Boot Camp will feature online play, which will support two players, while local wireless matches can involve up to four. This makes the stakes for war even greater, not to mention making multiplayer more challenging.

Advance Wars fans hoping to get a hold of the game in time for the Christmas season are in luck, as the game comes out right before the holiday. Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp comes out on December 3rd, just in time for the holiday season.
While the asking price is the standard $59.99 for a Nintendo Switch, it may also be a steep asking price for what are essentially two generations-old games. Nevertheless, those without experience with the series and those who know and love it are sure to find Re-Boot Camp to be the perfect way to spending their time.
