Marvel Drops Shang-Chi Clip Re-Introducing Iron Man 3’s ‘Mandarin’ to the MCU

Trevor Slattery, a.k.a. the “fake Mandarin,” has made a grand re-entrance into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, which can be seen in a new clip from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

In the minute-long video, titled “Jester,” Awkwafina’s Katy Chen and Simu Liu’s title character Shang-Chi come upon the captured thespian, played by Sir Ben Kingsley. The indentured performer recounts his story to the heroes, his current gig amounting to that of a fool for the genuine Mandarin, Shang-Chi’s father and the leader of the Ten Rings, Wenwu. The teaser takes place in the actor’s dressing room and is punctuated with humor thanks in part to Slattery’s faceless companion, Morris.

Slattery explains to his pair of visitors that he “served time in a federal prison, which turned out to be the best thing for me.” This is in reference to the Marvel One-Shot titled All Hail the King, which sees Slattery’s time in prison following his original appearance in 2013’s Iron Man 3. In the film, he is introduced as the Mandarin but is revealed later to be an imposter serving as a pawn for supervillain Aldrich Killian. After Killian’s spectacular defeat, Slattery joins the population of Seagate Prison from which he escapes with the help of the Ten Rings. For those who need a refresher, All Hail the King is currently available to stream on Disney+.

Kingsley confirmed his reprisal of Trevor Slattery in Shang-Chi during the newest MCU film’s red carpet premiere in August, saying, “I am in this movie and I’m a member of the Marvel family, because their welcome on Iron Man 3 was so astonishing and generous that I’m still with Marvel again. And I’m delighted to be here!”

Directed and co-written by Destin Daniel Cretton, Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is in theaters now.
