See: Queen Kane Suffers a Massive Blow | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for See Season 2, Episode 2, “Forever,” now available on Apple TV+.

In Season 2 of Apple TV+’s See, the mad Queen Kane (Sylvia Hoeks) has been making sinister moves to ensure her Payan kingdom remains a stronghold. She drowned the Kanzua Dam after insurgents rose up in secret at the palace, and has now made Pennsa the new capital. It’s well-fortified, boasts a formidable army and the citizens seem initially prepared to follow her to the death. However, Kane suffers another massive blow in her quest to brainwash people, which leads to her breaking — again.

Kane has a genocidal vein in her that has terrified many followers. Apart from the dam, she also razed the village she was held prisoner at in Season 1 — and let her Witchfinder general, Tamacti Jun, kill himself, as he couldn’t handle how Kane stole the throne from her little sister Maghra. This was her way of cleansing her kingdom, not caring if it was friend or foe.

She’s still unhinged this season, which is why Lord Harlan is worried she’s pushing Pennsa too far, too fast. The council’s concerned about the fact that Kane has taken over, making it clear they’re to wage war on Edo Voss and Trivantes. Little do they know she’s lied about the fact that Trivantes destroyed Kanzua and wants to battle the Payans, all as she seeks to consolidate power, distract from the truth of her reign, and take out rival colonies.

At the heart of it all is the promise young Boots, her ward, has impregnated her. Seeing as he’s got sight, she firmly predicts her child will too, telling Pennsa it’s a Chosen One who’ll guide them to victory. But it’s a major gamble, as kids with vision are what her Witchfinders once killed — abominations of the old world. Harlan warns about bucking centuries-old philosophies and religion like this, but Kane’s sure people will worship her child as a savior from the prophecy books she’s now rewriting.

Sadly, when she’s accosted by a mob, she realizes Harlan was right, which terrifies her. This is particularly troubling as she spurned his marriage offer hours before. He wanted to be king in exchange for placating the public and letting them know a sighted step-child would bring in a glorious new era.

Unfortunately, her world comes crashing down when Boots finds her stabbing her handmaiden, Cora. Considering Cora helped save Kane last season, Boots is shocked at the bloody scene. Kane admits she lost the baby and when Cora broke the news, she turned on her friend.

This means Kane doesn’t have a political or religious strategy anymore, and in her maddened state, as Boots tries to comfort her, she slashes his throat as well. She doesn’t care for his request to try again for another child. With her two confidants and heir now gone, she will have to retool the plan, as the spreading unrest could make this the perfect time for Harlan and Maghra to make their move.

The first two episodes of Season 2 of See are available on Apple TV+, with subsequent episodes available every Friday.
