What If…? Marvel Zombies Clip Reveals the Episode’s Infinity War Setting

Mark Ruffalo has released the first official clip for What If…?‘s Marvel Zombies episode, which takes place during Avengers: Infinity War.

The clip features Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner confronting the Black Order members Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian outside Doctor Strange‘s Sanctum Santorum. Of course, he can’t muster the power to unleash the Hulk, but luckily Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Wong appear to even the odds. After the dust settles, Banner is shocked to find his friend Tony Stark has the features of a zombie.

We begin with Banner stepping out of the Sanctum Santorum to an empty New York City street. He’s then joined by Ebony Maw and Cull Obsidian, who teleport down from Thanos’ ship. “C’mon big guy… time to go green,” Banner says as he valiantly tries to transform into the Hulk. However, just like in Infinity War, he’s unable to turn into his angry alter ego. Much of the dialogue is the same as what took place in Infinity War, except this time Ebony Maw’s speech is interrupted by a blast from behind by Iron Man.

Although viewers can see Iron Man, Doctor Strange and Wong step out of  a mystical portal, there bodies are mostly in the shadows, so it’s hard to tell if they are already zombies at this time, or if it occurs later during their battle against the Black Order. Earth’s Mightiest Heroes are able to defeat the Black Order, but they go a step further by slaughtering them off-screen as a nervous Bruce Banner looks on. “That sorta seems like overkill,” Banner says. As the dust settles, Iron Man rises without his helmet on, giving us a clearer look at his zombified state as the clip concludes.

When a What If…? series was first announced at 2019’s San Diego Comic-Con, one of the first alternate timelines previewed along with Captain Carter was a world overrun by zombies. The episode looks to adapt the popular Marvel Zombies comic book, turning our favorite heroes into mindless zombies. Captain America was the first Avenger to be shown as one of these creatures, with What If…? also releasing character posters of Cap and Hawkeye as zombies.

The episode appears to run alongside Infinity War, but it remains to be seen if the Mad Titan Thanos is behind the zombies, or if another threat is secretly pulling the strings.

What If…? releases new episodes every Wednesday on Disney+.
