Simu Liu, who plays the title character in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, did a stunning backflip after tossing the opening pitch of a San Francisco Giants game.
The official MLB Twitter page contains a clip of the entertaining stunt, played in slow-motion, with a smiling Liu landing triumphantly on the mound. The 32-year-old star sported a Giants jersey as he lobbed the baseball over home plate, effecting a strike as called by the team mascot. Liu leaped into the air and rolled backward, evoking the Master of Kung Fu in the middle of the diamond.
“Gotta be one of the best first pitches this year,” the tweet reads. The video feed includes a chyron promoting Shang-Chi, whose opening weekend has proven highly successful at the box office. To audition for the role of the kung fu impresario, Liu performed a very similar move for the director of the blockbuster movie, Destin Daniel Cretton. “He did a backflip into the Black Widow kneel pose, hair flip-up, looking straight into the camera,” Cretton said.
While his acrobatic prowess is an impressive point of Liu’s talents, some of his fans have highlighted a lesser-known aspect of the actor’s past. Evidently, he worked as a model for stock photos, a fact that he treated with good humor. Liu wrote, “Legitimately wondering if I am the greatest stock photo model of all time. Totally unrelated note, please stop buying these photos.”
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which also stars Awkwafina, Meng’er Zhang, Fala Chen and Tony Leung, is in theaters now.
