As a new take on the games within the Pokémon universe, Pokémon Unite ventures into the world of the MOBA. Every playable Pokémon has their own various strengths and weaknesses, covering a number of different stats and attributes.
In addition to choosing which Pokémon to play as, players can assign items for their chosen Pokémon to hold in order to boost certain stats or activate specific conditions during a match. Most of these items are variations of the ones found in the main Pokémon games, but their general concepts and properties are similar for the most part.
10 BEST: The Shell Bell Restores The Player’s Health During Battle
A Shell Bell is arguably better than Leftovers when it comes to healing items. In contrast to the passive health restoration that Leftovers offer, the Shell Bell works when Special Attacks hit their opponent. This means that health can be regained in the midst of an intense battle.
In addition to boosting Special Attack and regaining health, the Shell Bell reduces cooldowns of moves. This allows the user to use attacks more frequently while also restoring health at a faster rate.
9 WORST: The Float Stone Grants Extra Speed, But There Are Still Better Items
Float Stone is often revered as one of the best and most popular Held Items, but in reality, the speed boost only really amounts to a couple of seconds to run. This can be a great help to a slower Pokémon like a Defender, but overall, there are better options out there. For example, using X Speed or Eject Button as a regular item can prove to be more than enough.
The attack buff that the stone offers is merely secondary to the speed boost, as there are several other items that are better to offensive strength and power.
8 BEST: A Pokémon Holding A Focus Band Can Last Longer
The Focus Band is traditionally used to prevent its holder from fainting in one hit, just like a Focus Sash. However, in Pokémon Unite, it is even better to have one equipped.
Not only does holding a Focus Band increase the user’s Defense and Special Defense, but it also restores a little bit of health when their HP is low. The Focus Band is particularly ideal for tank Pokémon, making them even harder to defeat. If other players accompany a Focus Band-holding Defender, they should be able to win more battles.
7 WORST: Rocky Helmet Relies On Being Attacked By Physical Moves
Rocky Helmet was one of the most sought-after Held Items when the game was first release, but its popularity has since declined. Rocky Helmet grants the user additional Defense and health, and if they are hit by physical attack moves, the attacker will receive damage too.
However, Special Attacking Pokémon appear to be more popular now, rendering the damage aspect of the Rocky Helmet considerably less useful. Additionally, there are better items that can help with increasing Defense and health. As with most items, however, Rocky Helmet can still prove useful when dealing with physical attackers.
6 BEST: A Scope Lens Increases The Likelihood Of Critical Hits
Scope Lens is the only item that focuses on boosting the critical hit rate of moves used by the user. Players can have an instant advantage if they have their Pokémon hold a Scope Lens along with an item that boosts their base Attack stat.
This item can make a huge difference in the game and turn a battle over a zone into an easy victory. The potential to do extra damage with each hit makes it one of the best Held Items out there right now.
5 WORST: The Aeos Cookie Is Useless If The User Is Unable To Get Near A Scoring Zone
Like a number of the other Held Items, the benefits of the Aeos Cookie are only activated if the holding player scores a goal. In the case of the Aeos Cookie, every goal boosts the player’s max health. While it may seem like a great idea, especially for the likes of the frail Attackers, this depends on the player making multiple successful trips to an opposing team’s goal.
Not every game will allow for such tactics, with some requiring both teams to fight it out in intense battles. This is one situation where it would almost be pointless to have the Aeos Cookie equipped. There are also other items that could satisfy the need for extra max health without the condition of scoring goals.
4 BEST: A Muscle Band Significantly Boosts A Pokémon’s Attacking Power
As far as Held Items go, Muscle Band is one of the best. It gives the holder a guaranteed Attack and Speed buff, with the maximum possible increase being +15 and + 7.5% respectively. That not only makes Attackers even more formidable but also balances out the overall stats of Pokémon from other classes.
Muscle Band also grants the user additional Attack boosts based on the opponent’s remaining HP, making it perfect for finishing off an enemy quickly.
3 WORST: An Exp. Share Is Only Useful When The Player Can Communicate With Their Teammates
The Exp. Share has always been a powerful item in the traditional Pokémon games, allowing a Pokémon that isn’t fighting directly to also benefit from a victory by gaining a portion of the experience points.
The Exp. Share works similarly within Pokémon Unite. If a player is holding one and they are the lowest leveled player on the team, the Exp. Share allows them to get boosted help and catch up. While it’s a great idea on paper, it relies on proper communication and coordination. As a result, it’s difficult to utilize this item if the player is playing with random teammates with no way of communicating.
2 BEST: The Buddy Barrier Allows A Team To Capitalize On The Momentum Of A Good Unite Move
The Buddy Barrier is a Held Item that is often overlooked because it doesn’t provide a simple stat boost to the user. However, a Pokémon that is holding a Buddy Barrier will grant itself and a low-HP ally an additional shield when the user’s Unite move is activated.
A strong and bulky Pokémon holding this, such as a Defender, will be able to tank even more enemy damage than usual thanks to the additional shields. A struggling ally can also use the gifted shield to make a comeback and potentially help the team as a whole. For Pokémon with dangerous Unite moves, this item is a must.
1 WORST: Leftovers Only Works Out Of Battle
The Leftovers item has always been useful and valuable in the main Pokémon games because it restores the user’s health at the end of each turn. In Pokémon Unite, the Leftovers serve a similar purpose but only grant the user extra health when it is out of battle.
While this can be seen as a good thing, Pokémon Unite is often combat-heavy, and there are other ways to heal up, including berries, zones, and retreating to your team’s base. An item that does more to help turn the tide of battle would arguably be a better pick than using the Leftovers.
