Marvel’s What If is currently airing and doing a fantastic job at asking and answering questions that fans couldn’t even dream of. Anime series are often defined by having a huge and varied cast of characters, as well as plot twists that can change everything. That’s exactly the kind of structure that lends itself well to alternate stories being told.
That might involve taking well-known characters and removing the crucial moment that turned them into the protagonist, but it could also be changing the actions or motivations of side characters and watching just how big of an impact that has on the world at large.

Would Suzaki use his Geass to quickly ascend the political ladder of Britannia? Alternatively, it would be interesting to see a timeline where C.C. was powerful enough to act on her own and never involve the students of Ashford Academy.

If Trisha Elric had lived, her sons would have had normal lives. They would have never met the seven deadly sins but the world would have suffered a worse fate with fewer people able to stop them.
The lives of soldiers like Roy Mustang would have been brighter had Maes Hughes survived, but untold miseries would have continued if Shou Tucker was never caught. The Elric brothers have a tough time, but things could be a lot worse.
8 Death Note’s Alternate Timelines Could Have Terrifying Consequences
Light Yagami was an exceedingly dangerous person to possess a Death Note, but it could’ve been given to someone else instead. Would L still be alive and able to catch the holder of the book more easily?
A true criminal could go on a rampage with the book in hand, but the world could be equally impacted with the Death Note in the hands of a politician. It’s possible that everything might’ve taken a turn for the better if it were given to someone in poverty.
7 JoJo’s Bizzare Adventure Could Become Even More Bizarre
Many of the core events of JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure depend upon the actions of Dio Brando. So, what if Dio was never adopted by the Joestar family? It’s likely he would have never become a vampire or become obsessed with them, changing their future entirely.
Moving on to future parts, Yoshikage Kira might have lived in peace and continued his killing spree if his paper bag was never mixed up with Shigekiyo Yangu’s. And how far could Diavolo have taken Passione if he successfully managed to kill Trish Una?
6 Attack On Titan Would Be Forever Changed By Specific Events
In Attack on Titan, any alternate timeline would lead to drastic changes. If Grisha Yeager never ventured out beyond the internment zone with his sister, she would have lived, and Eren Yeager wouldn’t have been born. If Eren’s mother lived, Eren might have remained a civilian with no incentive to join the Survey Corps.
If Levi Ackerman never left his underground home, would the Survey Corps have lost all of their forces far earlier? Without their titan shifters, perhaps Marley would have never invaded Paradis.
5 Bleach Has So Many Different Possibilities
An alternate Bleach timeline could show what would’ve happened if Ichigo Kurosaki never became a Soul Reaper. Yet, with the sheer vastness of Bleach‘s world, alternate timelines can be a lot more complex than that. Without learning Bankai, Ichigo would never have beaten Byakuya Kuchiki or saved Rukia Kuchiki from death.
If Sosuke Aizen wasn’t a traitor, the Espada may have never formed. Things would’ve been pretty different if a more positive Soul Reaper created the Arrancar and used them as a force for good.
4 Sword Art Online Could Become A Different World Entirely
The world of Sword Art Online focuses on Kirito’s progression, but there was always a chance that he wouldn’t clear the original game. If that were the case, Kayaba Akihiko wouldn’t be brought to justice in the future, and companies would’ve avoided VR gaming.
If Asuna never met Kirito, perhaps his trauma and rage would have gotten the better of him and turned him into a player killer. If Laughing Coffin never formed in Aincrad, its members wouldn’t have moved on to torment Kirito as Death Gun in Gun Gale Online or Vassago Casals in the Underworld.
3 Jujutsu Kaisen Is All About The Right Time & Place
What if Yuji Itadori never met the Jujutsu sorcerers? Without finding one of Ryomen Sukuna’s fingers, his club members wouldn’t have needed saving from cursed spirits, preventing Yuji from eating the finger in the first place. ANd what if Kento Nanami continued living as a salaryman, or if Satoru Gojo didn’t become a Jujutsu sorcerer?
The likely outcome is that Mahito and his accomplices would have had their way with Yuji. In timelines where certain characters can be the difference between life and death, everything would’ve changed without them there.
2 My Hero Academia Can Take Darker Turns
The Joker once said, “one bad day” was all it took to become a villain. If things went wrong at U.A. High School, it’s possible that some of the students might have decided to pursue the path of a villain instead. Any one of their Quirks could be lethal, such as Ochako Uraraka’s potential to crush civilians with her gravity.
What if Izuku Midoriya never met All Might? Would he try to become a Quirkless hero with gadgets? If All Might didn’t lose his strength, he probably wouldn’t have worked at U.A., and the Kamino incident wouldn’t have happened. An alternate superpowered society contains dangerous possibilities.
1 That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime Has Enough Spin-Offs To Justify Anything
If Rimuru Tempest was never reincarnated, the monsters of Jura Forest would have perished to those higher up on the food chain. In the event that Shizue Izawa wasn’t summoned, Leon Cromwell might not have continued his dastardly experiment, but the world may have lost its greatest hero.
Any single faction under Rimuru’s control may have decided not to join him. Could characters like Benimaru or Diablo have joined forces with rival demon lords to achieve their goals instead? Countless possibilities exist in a story with this many characters.
