Nintendo Switch Online to Add Game Boy and Game Boy Color Games

It looks like the Nintendo Switch Online library is set to grow as rumors of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games have been corroborated by an inside source.

According to Eurogamer, who cites a contact close to the project, classic Game Boy and Game Boy Color games will soon be added to Nintendo Switch Online. The subscription service currently offers players a wide selection of both classic Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Nintendo Entertainment System games.

The potential introduction of games developed for Nintendo’s first batch of handheld systems may celebrate Nintendo Switch Online’s third anniversary. Launched in 2018, the service has steadily grown its available catalog of titles. Initially only offering a collection of games for the original NES, September 2019 saw the introduction of SNES games to the package. While many fans expected Game Boy games to arrive in 2020, it’s possible that the global pandemic delayed plans.

September is traditionally the month Nintendo hosts a major Direct showcase. While not necessarily a guarantee, the timeline of previous Nintendo Switch Online announcements suggests an impending reveal.

If the rumors turn out to be accurate then Nintendo fans have a great deal to look forward to. Many of the games available on the Game Boy and Game Boy Color were on-the-go ports of previously released console titles but the platforms boasted some great experiences of their own. Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening and several games in the Pokémon franchise could all make their way to the Nintendo Switch. Keep in mind, this is all speculation based on rumor, so be sure to have those grains of salt at the ready.

Beyond the selection of classic titles, Nintendo Switch Online offers users a host of other benefits including online multiplayer, cloud saves and several exclusive games and special offers. While the service is a great deal cheaper than competing subscriptions like PlayStation Plus and Xbox Live Gold, many have criticized it for its lackluster voice chat options and inconsistent cloud compatibility.

To go along with a shiny collection of Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, fans can also look forward to the release of the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. This updated version of the hybrid console sports a larger 7-inch OLED screen, improved back stand and several significant upgrades to the dock including a dedicated LAN port.

The Nintendo Switch OLED Model launches on Oct. 8.
