Legends of Tomorrow’s Matt Ryan Comments on His Constantine Successor

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for DC’s Legends of Tomorrow Season 6, Episode 14, “There Will Be Brood,” which aired Sunday on The CW.

The penultimate episode of Legends of Tomorrow‘s sixth season saw the tragic death of John Constantine and actor Matt Ryan has opened up about playing the punk wizard and what comes next now that he’s gone.

In an interview with Comicbook.com, Ryan discussed how he worked to make sure his portrayal of Constantine was faithful to the source material and how he will approach his new Legends character differently. “I was always working within a certain framework with John, or trying to,” he said. “Legends is a really fun, wacky show, and now I don’t have to look after John so much. So I have a lease on life there creatively, as an actor with this new character, that maybe I didn’t have with John. It was a different challenge, obviously.”

At Comic-Con@Home 2021, it was announced that Ryan will continue to appear on Legends in a new role. His new character will be Dr. Gwyn Davies, “an eccentric scientist from the early 20th century who might be the team’s only hope next season.” Season 7 will see the team stranded in a specific place and time, leaving them in “rough shape,” according to co-showrunner Phil Klemmer. He further explained that “all the things you normally rely upon, which are technological… this is the first time where, you know, instead of being able to like, you know, go from one place to another, next to the next, you guys are stuck and so it’s more of like a real-world odyssey.” He compared it to the Coen brothers film O Brother, Where Art Thou? and the Season 6 episode “The Satanist’s Apprentice.”

As for Ryan, he says he relishes the opportunity to see Constantine stories without his involvement. “As a fan, I’m so excited to see where he’s going to go now. And I can actually get excited about that, whether it’s on TV, or whether it’s in a movie, or Keanu’s playing him, or what have you,” Ryan said. “I’m just like, ‘Okay, what’s John doing?’ And I’m his biggest fan. So that is really exciting to me. Really exciting.”

Ryan debuted as Constantine in the series of the same name in 2014. Constantine was canceled after its inaugural 13-episode season, but fan response to Ryan’s portrayal of the character was strong enough that he was brought back to voice the wizard in the web series City of Demons and the animated feature Justice League Dark. Ryan was eventually brought into the Arrowverse in the third season of Arrow and went on to become a regular character on Legends in its fourth season.

Currently, Constantine appears in the Sandman audio drama, where he is voiced by Taron Egerton. Egerton has also joined the cast of the Sandman Netflix series in an unknown role, which also features Jenna Coleman as Constantine’s ancestor Johanna. This is in addition to the HBO Max series being developed with J.J. Abrams that will reportedly feature a BIPOC lead, as well as Peter Stormare’s announcement that a sequel to the 2005 film starring Keanu Reeves is in the works.

The season finale of Legends of Tomorrow airs this Sunday on The CW.
