8 New Thriller Movies and TV Shows to Watch in September 2021

While the summer is coming to a close, there are still plenty of thrills to enjoy on the big and small screen. From adaptations of popular books and comics, like Foundation and Y: The Last Manto original movies about high stakes, here are eight thrillers for film and television coming out September 2021.

The Gateway

A down-on-his-luck social worker is in over his pay grade with this case. He is trying to protect a client from her husband, but this man is a vile drug dealer with deadly connections, putting everyone at risk.

Directed by Michele Civetta, The Gateway stars Shea Whigham, Olivia Munn, Taryn Manning, Mark Boone Junior, Taegen Burns, Frank Grillo and Bruce Dern. It hits select theaters, on demand and digital Sep. 3.

The Voyeurs

For a more steamy thriller, The Voyeurs is about a couple moving in together and swearing to live rebelliously before officially settling down. They take this to a new level when they realize they can look into their neighbors’ window, and they take peeping way too far.

Directed by, The Voyeurs stars Sydney Sweeney, Justice Smith, Ben hardy and Natasha Liu Bordizzo. It airs Sep. 10 on Amazon Prime.

A deadly assassin is given 24 hours to live after being poisoned, so she is determined to exact her revenge. However, an unlikely encounter with the daughter of a past victim throws Kate’s final moments for a loop.

Directed by Cedric Nicolas-Troyan, Kate stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Miku Martineau and Woody Harrelson. It hits Netflix Sep. 10.

The Card Counter

Following the story of a soldier turned gambler, The Card Counter is about the protagonist teaming up with a fellow soldier’s son to get revenge. With Paul Schrader (Taxi Driver and Raging Bull’s writer) penning and directing the film, it seems this movie has the potential to be a more than high stakes game of poker.

Directed by Paul Schrader, The Card Counter stars Oscar Isaac, Tiffany Haddish, Tye Sheridan, Willem Dafoe, Ekaterina Baker, adrienne Lau, Amye Gousset, Alexander Babara, Alireza Mirmontazeri, Joel Michaely, Billy Slaughter and John Ceallach. It hits theaters Sep. 10.

Y: The Last Man

Based on the popular comic of the same name, Y: The Last Man is the latest apocalypse story to hit the small screen. In this world, every living being with a Y-chromosome is wiped out aside from one cisgender man and his monkey.

Staring Ben Schnetzer, Olivia Thirlby, Diane Lane, Elliot Fletcher, Amber Tamblyn, Imogen Poots, Juliana Canfield, Diana Bang and Marin Ireland, Y: The Last Man airs Sep. 13 on FX on Hulu.

Prisoners of the Ghostland

For fans of Nicholas Cage’s recent indie thrillers, like Mandy, Prisoners of Ghostland appears to be targeting the same audience. In Samurai Town, a bankroller is freed from jail by a warlord who wants him to find his runaway granddaughter.

Directed by Sion Sono, Prisoners of the Ghostland stars Nicolas Cage, Sofia Boutella, Nick Cassavetes, Bill Moseley, Tak Sakaguchi and Yuzuka Nakaya. It hits select theaters, on demand and digital Sep. 17.

Intrusion

A couple think they have the perfect home out in the middle of nowhere; however, a home invasion turns into an ongoing nightmare, even after the attackers are supposedly taken care of. Home invasion narratives are a staple of this genre, and Netflix has not forgotten that.

Directed by Adam Salky, Intrusion stars Freida Pinto, Logan Marshall-Green and Robert John Burke. It hits Netflix Sep. 22

Foundation

Isaac Asimov has had a number of acclaimed sci-fi books under his belt, including I, Robot, The Gods Themselves and Foundation. The latter is now being adapted to the small screen with Apple TV+, and while this is a sci-fi show first, Foundation also has thriller elements as the exiles try to save humanity in light of a galactic empire.

Staring Jared Harris, Lee Pace, Lou Llobell, Leah Harvey, Laura Birn, Cassian Bilton and Terrence Mann, Foundation airs on Apple TV+ Sep. 24.
