Community star Joel McHale offered a rather positive tease that the long-awaited movie version of the cult classic NBC sitcom could be coming together.
McHale appeared on the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend and opened up about the film, which has long been teased by those involved with the series. “I used to just lie about it,” McHale said. “People would be like, ‘Is the movie going to happen?’ And I’d be like, ‘Yeah, sure.'”
Now, however, the actor said things are actually moving forward. “I think things are in place,” McHale said. “People are like, ‘We’re game.’ We’ll have the money. So I think, like, uhh, a pizza, there is cheese being made. Someone’s got flour. There is water over here. This guy has an oven. And it could all come together. Or never come together.”
The promise of a Community movie began as something of a joke after Abed says in the Season 2 episode “Paradigms of Human Memory” that the NBC superhero series The Cape will last for “six seasons and a movie.” While that show was critically derided and only managed 10 episodes, Community fans took up the call for the beloved comedy. Eventually, Community did manage six seasons after hopping to Yahoo! Screen for its final one in 2015. Since then, fans have been eagerly anticipating a film.
The cast of Community reunited for a table read last year, with The Mandalorian‘s Pedro Pascal replacing Walton Goggins for the episode involving Pierce’s will reading, “Cooperative Polygraphy.” Though a movie would certainly be a much bigger commitment, especially with the actors no longer confined to their homes, it’s a good sign that even high-profile stars like Alison Brie and Donald Glover were willing to return.
Yvette Nicole Brown seemed confident that the film will happen, saying last year, “I’ve always joked and said that if we were going to do it, now would have been the time because everybody’s free. If you’re trying to get Donald Glover, you better get him during the pandemic. But that joke aside, 100% we’re going to do it.”
Meanwhile, creator Dan Harmon offered his own thoughts earlier this summer. “There is, like … a thing is happening. Logistically, the locks are coming away,” Harmon said. “And the only problems are becoming the creative ones, which is great, because I love those problems. I love having these conversations, and they’re being had.”
Avengers: Endgame co-director and former Community director Joe Russo is also certain that the film will happen. And even LeVar Burton, who guested on two episodes of the show, wants to be in the movie, whenever it arrives.
