Trevor Belmont is one of the main protagonists of Netflix’s Castlevania, but by no means is he a happy-go-lucky role model or heroic character. In fact, he has multiple layers to his personality and reasons for his behavior, ultimately molded by his past experiences and trauma.
Ultimately, Trevor is exceptional in combat which often comes in handy, and he provides the rather morbid show with many moments of comic relief. The other side of his character can make him difficult for others to understand or relate to, often rubbing them the wrong way. Some of these bad sides to his personality have been improved over the course of the show due to his budding relationship with Sypha but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still there to some degree.
6 Trevor Will Always Have That Carefree Part Of Himself From His Lonely And Alcoholic Days
The Trevor Belmont that is introduced at the start of the Netflix series is completely different from the one that makes it to the end of the fourth and final season. His first batch of scenes sums up how he has been living rather carefree as a drunkard with no real ambitions in this troubled world.
The rest of his family being shunned, excommunicated and disgraced is arguably the cause of his entire character being the way it is, but roaming the land as a lone wolf, the final Belmont descendent was definitely caused by this. He does eventually find ambition through meeting Sypha and Alucard, not to mention visiting his family home once again, but the core of his more carefree-ways always feels like it isn’t too far away.
5 Trevor Starts His Castlevania Journey Almost As Misanthropic As Dracula
A trait that Trevor Belmont and Dracula share is that they are both misanthropes, hating humans and human society, albeit for different reasons. Dracula’s hate stems from humankind and the Church taking his wife away from him, but Trevor’s originated from his family being excommunicated and betrayed despite putting everything into helping and protecting the citizens of Wallachia.
This explains his nature, especially at the start of the series, where he is roaming the lands by himself, trying to stay out of everyone’s way. He resents society for turning their backs on his family and tries to avoid doing anything too heroic until meeting Sypha and Alucard brings his family’s legacy out of him. This general disdain for people can also lead Trevor to make morally grey decisions, but these are often countered when he is with Sypha.
4 Trevor’s Snide Remarks And Consistently Sarcastic Tone Can Get On People’s Nerves
Despite his naturally negative outlook on life, Trevor does often attempt to interject wit and humor into conversation, albeit normally with underhanded, smarmy, or sarcastic comments. His interactions with Alucard sum this up perfectly, with them both laying on incredibly harsh insults and high levels of sarcasm.
Many people or even other characters in the Castlevania universe would not be able to cope with such humor, deeming it rude, but it is ultimately the foundation of their friendship.
3 Any Besmirching Of The Belmont Family Name Will Cause Trevor To Be Overly Defensive And Aggressive
His sadness and somewhat negative stance on life may stem from how his family was treated in the past, but from this also exists a sense of pride. If anyone speaks ill of his family, either their name or general legacy and antics, then he will bite back in defense.
Even though his jests with Alucard are normally harmless enough, any mockery thrown at Trevor’s family in any way appears to trigger his aggressive side more than anything else, and he will often snap back. Trevor probably resented the fact that he wasn’t the one to bring down the Church himself, due to their transgressions against the Belmont family.
2 Trevor’s Foolishly Impulsive Nature Can Often Be Mistaken As Courageous Bravery
Trevor Belmont would say of himself that he is adept in combat and able to keep his cool, but there are several moments in the Netflix series where this definitely isn’t the case.
When the trio of Trevor, Sypha, and Alucard are facing off against Dracula, Trevor gets caught up in the moment and in his emotions as he charges at Dracula unarmed when Sypha is injured, even though not even his Morningstar weapon was able to inflict sufficient damage on Dracula. Bravery is a must for any protagonist, but given how powerful Dracula is, this decision can only be described as impulsive and short-sighted.
1 Trevor Will Always Have His Naturally Gloomy Demeanor
As with most of Trevor’s personality traits, his general negativity and gloomy demeanor stem from the treatment and excommunication of his family by the Church, giving him a bleak outlook on life and people in general.
When they become intimate, Sypha does her best to cheer him up and make him less miserable and pessimistic, and even though she makes some headway, it is ultimately his default state of mind to be naturally pessimistic. He even begins to question at times if he deserves to be happy, with Sypha constantly reminding him that he definitely does.
