Becky Lynch Returns to WWE, Reclaims SmackDown Women’s Title

The Man has come back around.

At this year’s SummerSlam pay-per-view, Becky Lynch shocked the world by making her highly-anticipated return to WWE. Not only that, but she defeated Bianca Belair in less than a minute in order to reclaim the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

After it came to light that Sasha Banks would not be competing in her scheduled title match against reigning champion Belair, Carmella came to the ring as Banks’ apparent replacement. This turned out to be a misdirect, however, with Lynch making her way to the ring to a thunderous ovation shortly thereafter.

For weeks now, WWE fans have eagerly anticipated Lynch’s in-ring return. One of the company’s biggest stars of the modern age, Lynch was the inaugural WWE SmackDown Women’s Champion and — counting her victory against Belair tonight — has held the strap on four separate occasions. She is also a one-time WWE Raw Women’s Champion.

Lynch (real name Rebecca Quin) has been absent from WWE television for over a year now. On the May 11, 2020 episode of Monday Night Raw, Lynch announced that she and her now-husband Seth Rollins (Colby Lopez) were expecting their first child and that she would be taking a leave of absence due to her pregnancy. One that fateful episode, Lynch, who was the reigning Raw Women’s Champion at the time, relinquished the title to Asuka, who had won the women’s Money in the Bank ladder match on pay-per-view the previous night. Rollins and Lynch welcomed their first child, Roux, to the world on Dec. 7, 2020.
