In Brooklyn Nine-Nine, the main squad of the 99th precinct has been through a lot over the course of their eight-season journey. Each and every one of them has experienced their own highs and lows, but ultimately they have all prevailed as they are a team and they have each other’s backs.
Each character has their own quirks, strengths, and weaknesses, both in terms of their personality and their ability. As detectives, they are obviously supposed to be out and about keeping the people safe, while solving a wide range of crimes. Just because they have managed to push through tough situations as a team, doesn’t necessarily mean that they are all exceptional at their jobs, with some definitely being better at solving crimes as a detective than others.
10 Gina Linetti Wasn’t A Detective But Appeared To Occasionally Learn From Them
Gina was barely even interested in her own job as Holt’s assistant and would often make fun of the detectives. Despite not being qualified to be a detective, she was still occasionally seen offering an outsider perspective that would be useful in the process of solving a case.
Whether it was her initial intention or not, Gina retained a lot of important life lessons and ideals from being around hard-working policemen and women for such a long time, before she eventually left the Nine-Nine to pursue her dream of becoming an internet celebrity.
9 Michael Hitchcock Is Mostly Useless But Can Become A Genius If Food Is At Stake
While there are several pairings that have great chemistry and work well together in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, there are no two people seen together more than Hitchcock and Scully. They do so much together both in and out of work that they are often difficult to tell apart.
However, as the seasons progress, Hitchcock and Scully become more prominent in the show and thus their characters evolve, although they still hanging out together all the time. Hitchcock’s best moments as a detective come when he is working with Scully, although it usually takes a stroke of luck or a case regarding food, to get them interested and working hard.
8 Norm Scully Rarely Works Hard For Anything Other Than Food But Does Possess Some Useful Skills And Talents
Hitchcock and Scully’s best moments when they do actually happen are usually done as a duo. When the fate of food or comfort is on the line, they go from being lazy oafs to suddenly becoming the best detectives in the precinct, with their fast delivery and quick resolutions. The flashback episode showing their younger selves in action and is further proof that they were once exceptional detectives before they discovered chicken wings.
Scully often appears to be the more kind-hearted out of the two of them, and even has some hidden talents that come in handy in certain situations, such as knowing French and Morse code, and his talent for causing distractions.
7 Adrian Pimento Is Too Chaotic To Stay Still For Very Long
Despite not being a consistent member of the Nine-Nine due to a number of reasons, from being undercover to being on the run, all the way to simply changing occupation, Adrian Pimento seems to be seen helping out with cases that relate to him more often than not. This and his erratic and chaotic nature mean that his detective and solving skills are not really seen on the show.
He can offer insight into many a criminal’s mindset to help an investigation along, but ultimately that and his physical apprehending of suspects are the main aspects of his detective skills that are shown in the show.
6 Terry Jeffords Is A Hard-Working Family Man And Ranked Second Only To Holt In The Nine-Nine
Even after he gets past his fears of being in the field, Terry is still seen within the precinct more often than many others in the Nine-Nine squad, partially due to his higher-ranking role. Terry has been paired with other detectives that have solved cases, but he rarely solves cases with his own intuition or skill.
As with every Halloween Heist, the iteration that Terry wins, does showcase exceptional detective stealth and forward-thinking, but in general, he is often outshone by the other members of the Nine-Nine.
5 Charles Boyle Is Bizarre But Is A Vastly Underrated Detective
Charles is often seen as the silly understudy for Jake, but he has shown on more than one occasion in the show, how good a detective he actually is.
In ‘Dillman’, Jake is bewildered that Charles is being considered over him to take charge of an upcoming task force, but when he becomes too focussed on proving himself in a case while battling against Frank Dillman, Boyle is actually the one who silently pieces everything together and solves the case, while everyone looks on in amazement. Despite his bizarre nature and strange relationships, Boyle is the dark horse of the Nine-Nine, often being overlooked and underrated.
4 Rosa Diaz Is Mysterious And Terrifying, But Exceptional At Her Job
Rosa and Jake rose up through the ranks together from the academy, and are often seen as the same in terms of ability and capabilities. Rosa often gets presented with more responsibility than Jake, with the Giggle Pig task force being a prime example of that.
However, in terms of what is shown on the show, Rosa’s athletic prowess and aggressive nature make her better known for the physical side of being a detective. She is often paired with those that are more deliberate with their solving skills, but whenever she works a case with Jake, the two bounce off one another, perfectly showcasing both of their abilities.
3 Amy Santiago Is Smart And A Perfect Rival For Jake Before She Chose the Leadership Route
Amy is rarely seen having epiphany moments when solving cases like the ones that Jake experiences regularly, but it is just known as common knowledge that she is one of the smartest and best detectives in the precinct. With her being eager to learn under Captain Holt and with her often sharing certain similarities with him, it has always been clear that she wants to follow in his footsteps and become a leader.
She has demonstrated these leadership skills on multiple occasions, with her leading a city-wide operation during a blackout while giving birth being her crowning moment.
2 Captain Raymond Holt Improved The Nine-Nine Immeasurably
Arguably the only member of the Nine-Nine that could potentially push Jake from the top spot is Captain Holt. When he gets involved in cases, he shows that he still has the skills as a detective, both mentally and physically, despite being older. When Wuntch demotes him in season 7, he takes over one of Jake’s cases and solves it quickly and easily, while everyone else seems to struggle.
While all these skills are somewhat reduced in the show due to his role as Captain, his reputation and everything that he has had to endure and overcome to get where he is, are a testament to his character, personality, and capabilities as a cop and detective. More flashbacks to Holt’s past cases would have been welcome, to further prove that Holt is one of the best detectives to ever be involved with the Nine-Nine.
1 Jake Peralta Is Unbeatable When He Puts His Mind To A Case
For all of Jake’s immaturity and irresponsibility, when working a case, there are no better detectives on show in Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Even when he hits a setback during a case, he will often be the one to remedy the situation and solve it. During difficult cases, Jake will often sacrifice sleep and his sanity in the quest to find the solution, and will often succeed, whether it’s due to his obsessive researching or simply a conversation that links itself to the case.
Terry said himself when he was describing the squad to Captain Holt back in the first season, that Jake Peralta is the best detective at the precinct, and it is a perfect example of don’t judge a book by its cover.
