In a recent interview, Marvel President Kevin Feige discussed when fans can expect to see the Marvel Cinematic Universe‘s next major team-up film.
Speaking to Collider‘s Steve Weintraub, Feige noted that given the MCU’s constantly expanding scale, a full-scale crossover film will require a great deal of time to properly execute. “I think we want there to be a reasonable amount of time from the Endgame to start a new saga, which is already underway and already started,” said Feige. “And then you need time, as you did in Phase 1, to build that saga before you start bringing everyone together.”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe kicked off Phase 4 with Black Widow, which was initially meant to launch in May 2020, roughly a year after Avengers: Endgame. Black Widow was subsequently delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, going on to simultaneously launch in cinemas and Disney+ on July 9, 2021. The dual launch has since resulted in the film’s star Scarlett Johansson suing Disney for breach of contract.
Phase 4 has also seen the introduction of several TV series that build upon the MCU mythos. In 2021 alone, fans have been treated to WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki and What If…? on Disney+. While Marvel has previously released series based on its cinematic universe, such as Daredevil, Agent Carter and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D, none of the shows released prior to 2021 are considered canon.
While the next major team-up movie is still a long way off, fans of the MCU won’t be left wanting. Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings launches on Aug. 16, followed quickly by The Eternals (which doesn’t feature Galactus) on 28 Oct. Spider-Man: No Way Home is also intended to release on 17 Dec., but the absence of any trailers has fans concerned that the film may miss its intended window.
While early phases of the MCU initially stuck to solo character movies, Phase 4 will likely see Marvel intersperse its heroes within other franchises more commonly. Doctor Strange is already confirmed to appear in Spider-Man: No Way Home, while Scarlett Witch is set to feature in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. How all of these stories come together to set the stage for Avengers 5 remains to be seen, but it seems like Kevin Feige certainly has a plan in mind.
