South Park: How Officer Barbrady’s Firing Marked a Series Shift

If there’s one truth about South Park that fans must accept, it’s that every adult character is a combination of stupid and incompetent. And in almost every case, the word corrupt could also be added to that list. While Officer Barbrady is definitely the former, he’s at the very least not corrupt, which is more than can be said about the rest of the cops in town. That’s why his firing was such a hard moment for many South Park fans.

Officer Barbrady was one of the longest-running secondary characters in the series. He made his debut in the Season 1 premiere, investigating Cartman’s alien abduction claims. Suffice to say that he botched it completely, setting the standard for the quality of service he would offer throughout the rest of South Park. In Season 2, Episode 4, it was revealed that he was completely illiterate, and the boys had to help him learn how to read to keep his job.

That was a prime example of how much Barbrady actually cared about South Park. He was surprisingly open about who he was and did what he had to do to make the situation right. And for Barbrady, it’s always been about doing the job as well as he was capable of. Admittedly, he did a pretty terrible job, but that doesn’t mean that he wasn’t a good person. In fact, he’s a pretty nice guy who’s there when people need him. It’s a good thing, too, because the rest of South Park’s police are even worse at their jobs. On top of that, they’re also a morally bankrupt group of violent menaces who make most situations they’re involved with worse.

Eventually, South Park stopped using Barbrady. Prior to his final arc in Season 19, there were a few seasons that he did not appear at all. Barbrady wasn’t the most popular character on the show, but he was a big part of the foundation. Watching him fade away like that was difficult for some fans as it signaled a change in South Park some were not prepared for.

Officer Barbrady stands in South Park

After Season 19, Barbrady disappeared and has since only appeared a couple of times in background cameos. Creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker confirmed that Barbrady was effectively gone from the show and would rarely be used again. This actually made him one of an extremely small group of characters who have been retired from active use on South Park without being killed.

South Park has always maintained an air of absurdity and poignant offensiveness that informed the comedy. But as the years went on, the stories often had stronger underlying themes, many of which contained social commentary. Much like Pip, Mrs. Crabtree and Principal Victoria before him, Officer Barbrady just didn’t fit the series’ tone anymore. It’s good that the show has evolved, but it also inevitably led to changes like this.

The odd thing is that Barbrady had brief appearances in Seasons 21, 23 and 24, all of which featured him back in uniform. It’s hard to say if Barbrady was rehired as a cop again or if he was just running around in his uniform because he couldn’t let go. Regardless, knowing that the series is done with the character is a little bittersweet.
