Shang-Chi Features the MCU Return of Sir Ben Kingsley | CBR

Sir Ben Kingsley confirmed that he will be returning to the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Kingsley made an appearance at the red carpet premiere of Marvel’s latest film. Speaking to ET’s Matt Cohen, Kingsley said, “As you just saw, I was talking to Kevin Feige, and thanks to Kevin and Robert Downey Jr. and Drew Pearce [Writer on Iron Man 3] and Shane Black [Director on Iron Man 3], I am in this movie and I’m a member of the Marvel family, because their welcome on Iron Man 3 was so astonishing and generous that I’m still with Marvel again. And I’m delighted to be here!”

Fans of the MCU will no doubt remember Kingsley’s controversial character of Trevor Slattery, first seen in 2013’s Iron Man 3. While Kingsley was initially thought to be playing The Mandarin, the terrifying leader of the Ten Rings, he was revealed as a fraud throughout the course of the film. While some fans enjoyed the subversion, many found the bait-and-switch to be disappointing.

While it’s unconfirmed whether Kingsley will reprise his role of Trevor Slattery in Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings, it’s likely that the out-of-work-actor will return. Slattery was last seen in Marvel Studio’s All Hail The King, a One Shot that appeared on the Thor: The Dark World Blu-ray. In the short feature, an agent of the real Ten Rings organization breaks Slattery out of prison, stating that he was sent by the real Mandarin.

Fans who have been following Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings know that the film will feature Wenwu, played by Tony Leung, who is the actual leader of the Ten Rings.

Beyond the potential return of Trevor Slattery, Shang-Chi will see several MCU characters leaping back into action. Tim Roth’s Abomination was revealed during one of the film’s trailers, while Benedict Wong will be reprising his role as Wong, most notably seen in Doctor Strange.

Fans of Sir Ben Kingsley won’t need to wait too long to see how he fares in Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. The film releases in theatres on Sept. 3. The latest MCU blockbuster will remain in cinemas for 45 days before making the leap to Disney+, a decision which recently resulted in some controversial statements from Disney CEO Bob Chapek.
