In the aftermath of the MCU‘s Avengers: Infinity War, half of the universe was blipped and the other half was very angry at Peter Quill, also known as Star-Lord. If it weren’t for Peter losing control in the battle against Thanos on Titan, there may have been a chance to prevent Thanos from getting all of the stones.
This wasn’t the first time Peter lost control of himself or of a situation, as shown throughout Guardians of the Galaxy, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, and Infinity War, but it was definitely the most devastating.
8 When He Ran Away After His Mother’s Death
At the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy, young Peter Quill’s mother lay dying from cancer. In her final moments, she asks him to take her hand, but Peter can’t bring himself to do it. His mother dies and Peter screams in mourning, causing his grandfather to take him outside into the hallway so he can calm down. But Peter doesn’t calm down and instead runs out of the hospital and into the night where Yondu and his Ravagers fly down and abduct him.
7 When He Danced Like No One Was Watching Before Stealing The Orb
The most benign lack of control that Star-Lord conveyed was his little dance number during the opening credits of Guardians of the Galaxy. With his signature Walkman and his Awesome Mix Vol. 1 cassette tape, Star-Lord danced and sang his way across the surface of Morag on his way to steal the Orb, not knowing that it held an Infinity Stone. While it made for a great scene, his compulsion to listen to music was perilous given the situation.
6 When He Couldn’t Help But Flip Off The Nova Corp
The first time the Guardians met was on Xandar as Peter was trying to sell the Orb, Gamora was trying to steal it, and Rocket and Groot were trying to get the bounty on Peter’s head.
This series of events led to the four of them being taken into custody by the Nova Corp and, as infamously shown in the film’s trailers, they’re all put into a lineup. While the Xandarians go over Peter’s charges, he proceeds to flip them off, “outlaw” style.
5 When He Got Angry About His Walkman Being Used
After getting arrested by the Nova Corps and sent to the Kyln, everyone’s personal items are sorted and stored away. One guard takes a real interest in Peter’s Sony Walkman. The guard starts playing “Hooked On A Feeling” by Blue Swede from the cassette tape Peter’s mother had given him and Star-Lord doesn’t handle it well. As the song plays, Peter falls out of the prison line and loudly confronts the guard, resulting in him getting tasered over and over again.
4 When He Just Had To Flirt With Ayesha
Towards the beginning of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, the Guardians are hired by the Sovereign to destroy an Abilisk before it takes out their planet’s energy source.
After killing it, they sought their payment from the Sovereign. When he met Ayesha, the Sovereign leader, Peter just couldn’t help himself from laying it on thick when he flirted with her, even though he and Gamora had their “unspoken thing.” While Peter thinks he’s being suave and cool, he’s just embarrassing himself.
3 When He Didn’t Hesitate To Shoot His Celestial Father
The reason Peter was abducted as a child was so he could be delivered to his father, Ego, who wished for Peter to be his progeny. Ego awakens Peter’s celestial power and reveals his master plan of planting a piece of himself throughout the entire universe. In doing so, he tells Peter that he had put a cancerous tumor in his mother’s brain to ensure Peter wouldn’t get distracted. Peter loses control and uses his Quad Blasters on his father when he learns why, and how, his mother died.
2 When Thor Showed Up On The Milano
In Avengers: Infinity War, worlds collided when the Guardians answered a distress beacon from the Asgardians and found Thor to be the lone survivor. After crashing into their windshield, Thor was brought aboard the Milano and the Guardians were immediately infatuated with the unconscious god—everyone except Peter.
Peter immediately became insecure and lost control of his ship. In Endgame, Thor joined the Guardians and Peter once again loses control of his ship in a hilarious, subtle way.
1 When He Learned Of Gamora’s Fate
When Star-Lord, Drax, Mantis, Iron Man, Spider-Man, and Dr. Strange join forces to take out Thanos when he arrives, it’s actually Peter Quill’s plan that neutralizes the Mad Titan. It would have worked out too if it weren’t for Peter’s meddling emotions.
The gauntlet is almost off of Thanos’ arm but, just like when he learned that Ego killed his mother, Peter couldn’t control himself when it’s revealed that Thanos had murdered Gamora, the woman he loves.
