Star Trek: Prodigy marks another installment in the franchise’s massive catalog. However, it also puts a new spin on Star Trek‘s usual material by delivering family-friendly content geared toward a younger audience. While Prodigy still features familiar faces like Voyager‘s Kathryn Janeway, it also introduces a new crew of teenage protagonists adventuring in the largely unexplored Delta Quadrant.
With the series slated for a 2021 release, here’s everything we know about Star Trek: Prodigy so far, including its plot, cast, trailer and release date.
EDITOR’S NOTE: This article was updated Aug. 16, 2021, to include confirmation by Star Trek: Voyager veteran Robert Beltran that he’s part of the voice cast of Star Trek: Prodigy.
What Is Star Trek: Prodigy’s Plot?
While Prodigy features the return of Kathryn Janeway, a never-before-met group of adolescence is the show’s main focus. Set after the events of Star Trek: Voyager, the rebellious kids jet off in an abandoned starship in search of adventure in the Delta Quadrant.
At 2021’s Comic Con@Home, Prodigy’s executive producer, Dan Hageman, confirmed the show is “geared to kids, but intended for everybody.” Hageman also stated the teenage protagonists aren’t part of Starfleet but cause “trouble and mischief” in the larger universe. As such, audiences can expect a whole host of new adventures and plenty of shenanigans to ensue.
Who’s In Star Trek: Prodigy’s Cast?
Prodigy‘s group of misfit aliens includes five main characters and a mysterious (and adorable) blob. Rylee Alazraqui voices Rok-Tahk, an unusually bright eight-year-old Brikar girl. Brett Gray plays Dal, an unknown species and teenager filled with “unwavering hope.” Angus Imrie takes on Zero, a “noncorporeal, genderless, energy-based lifeform” known as a Medusan. Jason Mantzoukas plays Jankom Pog, a teenage Tellarite known for his argumentive nature. Ella Purnell voices Gwyn, a 17-year-old Vau N’Akat seeking the ultimate adventure. Lastly, Dee Bradley Baker, known for his extensive voice-over work in American Dad!, SpongeBob SquarePants and other Star Wars series, rounds out the rag-tag group as Murf, an unusual yet endearing blob with an “insatiable appetite for ship parts.”
Star Trek fans were also delighted to learn that Kate Mulgrew will reprise her iconic role as Kathryn Janeway from Voyager. However, in Prodigy, Janeway serves as the starship’s built-in emergency training hologram. Along with Mulgrew, another Voyager icon will be joining Prodigy‘s ranks. Robert Beltran, who played Chakotay, announced he is joining the animated series at a Star Trek: Voyager panel. However, it’s not yet known if he’ll be reprising the role of Chakotay, although serving as Janeway’s first officer seems likely.
Does Star Trek: Prodigy Have A Trailer?
Prodigy‘s first teaser trailer introduces Trekkies to the new bunch of protagonists as they set off in search of a “better life.”
What Is Star Trek Prodigy’s Release Date?
Prodigy does not currently have a firm release date but is expected to drop sometime in Fall 2021. The series will premiere its 10-episode season on Paramount+ then air on Nickelodeon at a later unknown date.
