The anime adaptation of Knights of Sidonia was one of the first Netflix Original Anime, paving the way for the streaming service to get more of the medium in its catalog. All good things must come to an end, however, and the series will be concluding with an upcoming movie. Titled Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven In the Stars, this film marks the end of a well-regarded sci-fi anime, as well as a watershed moment for anime streaming.
Already out in Japan after having its initial, planned release was delayed, Love Woven In the Stars will also be coming out soon for international audiences. Here’s what the movie is about, what the trailer and other footage have shown so far and when and how non-Japanese fans can finally see how the story ends.
The Plot of Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven In the Stars
Love Woven In the Stars is an original story, which means it’s not based on original the Knights of Sidonia manga. Tsutomu Nihei, the creator of the manga, stated, “Love Woven in the Stars reveals some answers which were not in the original comic! I didn’t put these parts in the comic originally as I wanted to leave it up to the readers’ imaginations… [That] is what I would say but that’s a lie — I just forgot to write them! And the film contains a number of other new elements as well. So even if you have read the comic, it’s a must-see! And if you haven’t read the comic yet, I’m sure you’ll want to after seeing the film! I can’t wait to see it either!”
The film involves the final battle against the Gauna aliens, who ravage the remains of the human race after the destruction of planet Earth. It takes place 10 years after the previous adventures in the Knights of Sidonia series, with protagonist Nagate Tanikaze having progressed from a mere trainee to the hero of the spaceship known as the Sidonia. Amid one last conflict with the remains of the Gauna, love blossoms between Nagate and half-human/half-Gauna Tsumugi.
Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven In the Stars’ Trailers
The first subtitled trailer for Love Woven In the Stars showcases the series’ trademark use of CG to illustrate its dark future and intense battles. The trailer begins showing the peace attained after the previous battles with the Gauna before revealing how harrowing things quickly become, with gut-wrenching, pulse-pounding battles taking precedence.
News to Know About Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven In the Stars
The “film series” for the Netflix adaptation began in 2015 with a film compilation of the first season’s story. The upcoming final film was announced last summer, with Hiroyuki Seshita, the director of the show’s first season, returning as the chief director. Tadahiro Yoshihira, on the other hand, is the primary director, and the voice cast from the show return to reprise their roles.
Sadayuki Murai and Tetsuya Yamada also come back to write the movie, having handled the show’s scripts as well. In April, the first four minutes of the movie were uploaded to YouTube, with the film meant to release the following month. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, however, pushed this back until June.
Release Date for Knights of Sidonia: Love Woven In the Stars
As previously mentioned, the movie has already been released in its entirety in Japanese theaters (on June 4). Western viewers can finally watch Love Woven In the Stars on September 13 in just a few more weeks. It won’t be coming out on Netflix, however, since the original series has been taken off of the platform.
Instead, both the new movie and the original series will be available through Funimation, which will also be releasing the movie in theaters. It will also begin streaming the series through its own streaming service, making Funimation the soon-to-be destination for those who want to see the end of the Knights of Sidonia saga that Netflix began.
