The movie focuses on the titular Guy as he adapts to his world of Free City when he gains access to a pair of sunglasses that allow him to see everything the way that video game players do. Deciding to try and level up to impress another player named Molotov (Jodie Comer), Guy quickly adjusts and becomes a globally recognized figure within the gaming community. “Blue Shirt Guy” establishes himself as one of the only players trying to establish himself as a “hero” and plays accordingly. He becomes so popular, in fact, that people across the globe end up enthralled with his mission, unaware of the full stakes at play.
By the end of the film, Guy’s leveled up extensively and has gained plenty of weapons and gear, including some deep-cut ones to other video games. He even has a few from outside media, which he shows off when he comes face-to-face with his muscular-bound counterpart known as the Dude. Created to stop Guy from saving Free City and helping to reveal the truth behind Antwon (Taika Watiti) stealing the code for Free City from Molotov’s real-life player Millie and her friend Keys (Joe Keery), Dude quickly proves to be a massive physical threat, with Guy knocked to the ground with a heavy blow.

But when Dude goes in for a kill shot, the hit is deflected by one of Guy’s secret weapons: Captain America’s shield. The film then deploys the signature Captain America motif music from his appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and cuts to Chris Evans in a coffee shop. It turns out Evans is one of the millions of people watching the fight play out with interest, and he lets out a shocked curse word in response to seeing someone else bust out the shield and music he’s synonymous with.
Evans famously played Steve Rogers across the first three phases of the MCU before hanging up the shield at the conclusion of Avengers: Endgame, and his exclamation could be seen as a meta-joke about Captain America’s reluctance to say curse words being thrown out the window the second he sees Reynolds using his signature weapon in a film. Regardless, while Evans’ appearance in Free Guy is brief, it’s still a fun cameo that leans on his iconic role.
To see Chris Evans’ cameo, Free Guy is in theaters now.
