Photos from the set of HBO’s The Last of Us TV series tease what appears to be a major location from the original video game.
These images come from CTV News‘ Jordan Kanygin and show sets being built in Calgary that bear a strong resemblance to the Boston quarantine zone from the first game. Most notably, the green storefront pictured here is a perfect match for a building from the game’s universe, while the faded brick façade recalls an abandoned pizzeria from the area.
Published by Naughty Dog in 2013, The Last of Us takes place in a post-apocalyptic future ravaged by the Cordyceps virus 20 years earlier. Season 1 of HBO’s series adapts the plot from the original game, which begins with a prologue that follows protagonist Joel as he flees Austin, Texas in the wake of the virus’ outbreak with his brother Tommy and daughter Sarah. Gabriel Luna, who’s playing Tommy on the TV adaptation, posted a behind-the-scenes photo of himself with Pedro Pascal and Nico Parker (who are playing Joel and Sarah, respectively) when filming began, indicating the show will closely follow the game’s story.
After the prologue, The Last of Us finds Joel working with his partner Tess (played by Anna Torv on the show) as a smuggler in the quarantine zone in the North End of Boston. This is where Joel meets Ellie (Bella Ramsay), a 14-year-old girl immune to the Cordyceps virus who Joel and Tess attempt to smuggle to the Fireflies, a rebel group that opposes the military regime overseeing the quarantine zones.
HBO’s The Last of Us Season 1 is being written by Naughty Dog game developer and series co-creator Neil Druckman and Chernobyl writer Craig Mazin, with Druckman and Mazin serving as executive producers alongside Carolyn Strauss (Game of Thrones). The first season consists of 10 episodes and has Merle Dandridge reprising her vocal and motion-capture role from the games as Marlene, the head of the Fireflies. Jeffrey Pierce is also starring in the series, though not as his character Tommy from the games.
The Last of Us doesn’t have a release date, but looks to premiere on HBO in 2022. Pascal is also onboard to reprise his role as Din Djarin in The Mandalorian Season 3, which may arrive near the end of next year.
