While it seems like a lifetime ago now, there was an era when Lost was the most talked-about show on television. Every episode caused fans to go crazy with wild speculation about what was actually going on. Even years after the series came to an end, people still debate many of the hanging plot threads.
This was a show that threw twists and turns at fans so rapidly that it felt like it was impossible to keep up. Still, there were more than a few twists that no one watching saw coming. In some cases, fans are still stunned by them today.
10 The Truth About The Others
During the course of the first season, it became apparent that the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815 were not alone on the Island. They quickly came into contact with a group referred to as The Others. They initially appeared to be a group of savage loners but the truth was far from it.
The Others were a group of people formerly associated with the DHARMA Initiative. These were scientists, researchers, and more who had devoted their lives to understanding the power of the Island. It was quite a shock to learn who they really were.
9 Kate Murdered Her Father
Everyone who survived the plane crash was there for a reason. Each one of them had a dark history or a secret that led to them all being on the same plane at the same time. There was very little coincidence involved in the series as everyone was connected on some level.
Kate Austen was one of the major players in the events on the Island. What was eventually revealed was that Kate had spent years on the run after murdering her abusive step-father. He turned out to be her biological father, and the incident was the beginning of a life of crime.
8 The Smoke Monster Reveal
One of the biggest mysteries on the show related to the Smoke Monster. The powerful entity roamed the Island, killing as it saw fit. What it was, who created it, and why it was there plagued fans for years as the series moved forward.
Eventually, the other shoe dropped and the Smoke Monster turned out to be the alternate form of The Man in Black. Virtually no one watching the series was remotely satisfied with that explanation. That being said, it’s hard to imagine one that would have made fans happy.
7 The Freighter Wasn’t There To Save Them
As the survivors unraveled the mysteries surrounding them on the Island, they continued to hope for a rescue. At one point, they believed it had come in the form of a freighter which they hoped had arrived to save them.
At the time, they believed the ship was sent by Desmond’s significant other, Penny. The twist came when they discovered it was sent by her father, Charles Widmore, and he was definitely not there to help Desmond or the survivors.
6 What Was In The Hatch
Early in the series, the survivors found a mysterious hatch in the ground. Keeping in mind that this was supposed to be a deserted tropical island, a metal hatch with light coming out of the window came as a bit of a shock to those who knew about it.
Eventually, the survivors got inside. The hatch was an entrance to DHARMA Initiative Station 3, aka The Swan. This was also how they met Desmond Hume, who had been living inside the facility for a lot longer than he would have liked.
5 Desmond Caused The Plane Crash
Unlike the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815, Desmond ended up on the Island thanks to a boat. He had entered a sailing race around the world and shipwrecked on the Island. Things went from bad to worse when he was essentially tricked into taking over the Swan.
Desmond had to enter numbers into a computer every 108 minutes to prevent disaster. One time he screwed up, and the incident caused the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. It was a huge burden for him to carry though he eventually realized the incident was the Island working through him.
4 The Horrifying Connection Between Sawyer And Locke
John Locke was one of the most compelling characters in the series. He was both a hero and a villain, though he drifted more and more to the side of being a bad guy as the show went on. But the connection between him and Sawyer blew a few minds.
Locke’s father was a con man who went by the name Anthony Cooper. Under the name Tom Sawyer, he caused the deaths of Sawyer’s parents. Cooper was brought to the island, and Locke used this information to get Sawyer to kill his own father.
3 The Reveal Of Locke’s History
Learning more about the respective history of everyone on the Island continued to flesh the story out. While some of the details were less illuminating and more confusing, other details enhanced the story. Plus, Locke was an endlessly fascinating character.
Possibly the most interesting part of Locke’s history was the fact that he was confined to a wheelchair before arriving on the Island. The extent of its healing powers was shocking, to say the least.
2 Season 6’s Flash-Sideways
As Lost went on, the series started taking some big storytelling risks by including time-traveling. Things got pretty convoluted in some cases but these moves also allowed fans to learn about parts of the mythology they otherwise might not have.
In Season 6, an alternate reality known as the flash-sideways happened in parallel to the main story. It showed the characters living out their lives as if the Island never happened. This was a season-long twist that confounded fans at the time but makes a lot more sense looking back at it now.
1 The Contentious Finale
While there have been a lot of series finales that failed to deliver, one of the most contentious of all time belongs to Lost. Much like the entirety of the final season, the last episode left many fans confused and perplexed but it’s become much clearer over time.
The flash-sideways turned out to be what happened to the survivors after they died. They all lived proper lives, one without the pain and suffering they endured on the Island. The last episode threw one final twist at fans, both in the reveal of the flash-sideways and the final battle with The Man in Black.
