While it premiered on the CBC in Canada and POP TV in the United States in 2015, it wasn’t until Schitt’s Creek hit the streaming service Netflix in 2017 that the show became a pop culture phenomenon. Created by comedy icon Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy, Schitt’s Creek is about the trials and tribulations of a once-wealthy family as they lose everything and are forced to move to a small rural town they happen to own.
Schitt’s Creek has been praised for its comedy and heart. As the show’s viewership continued to grow with each season, so too did the cast. This allowed viewers to get to know the residents of their new favorite fictional town while watching the Rose family grow in different ways. With the series coming to a close with Season 6, fans have flocked to IMDb to let the world know which seasons are the best.
6 Season 1 Kicked Things Off – 7.6
While the first season of Schitt’s Creek has the lowest season rating on IMDb, that doesn’t mean it’s not worth watching. This debut season sets up everything that will happen across the next five years in the Rose family members’ lives and the residents of Schitt’s Creek.
And while it isn’t as strong as the rest of the series, it is impossible not to love Catherine O’Hara’s Moira Rose from the very start. If ever there was a reminder of just how amazing Catherine O’Hara is, it’s Schitt’s Creek.
5 Season 2 Kept It Going – 8
By the second season, Schitt’s Creek was well aware that it couldn’t just rely on fish out of water and slobs vs snobs jokes if it wanted to be something more. This season starts to grow the Rose family, most notably Alexis who is dealing with the aftermath of rejecting Ted’s marriage proposal.
Season 2 also takes cues from Eugene Levy’s work as the co-writer of the Christopher Guest films—most notably Waiting for Guffman and A Mighty Wind—by mixing in more heart with the comedy, making the audience care about the characters on a deeper level.
4 Season 3 Exploded The Fanbase – 8.1
After the third season, Schitt’s Creek came to Netflix and became an instant hit for the streaming service. Season 3 also introduced fans to Patrick Brewer, the love of David Rose’s life. This season is a major one for Dan Levy’s David, who not only meets his future husband but also decides to start his own business, showing himself to be more of an independent person than even he realized.
At the same time, patriarch of the family Johnny Rose and hotel manager Stevie struggle to turn the once-failing hotel into a successful business, and Alexis goes back to school.
3 Season 4 Kept The Laughs Coming – 8.3
What may be the funniest of the six seasons of Schitt’s Creek, the Rose family faces a number of challenges, including the rumored death of Moira Rose—which brings new attention to the one-time soap opera star—and the wait for the arrival of Jocelyn and Roland Schitt’s new baby, with a very special baby shower organized by David.
The fourth season is filled with laughs, but ends on the extremely touching “Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose,” which flashes between the present-day Christmas where the whole family seems to be too busy to celebrate together, and the last one they had when they were wealthy.
2 Season 5 Brought A Lot Of Heart – 8.3
Season 5 takes the touching finale of the fourth season with “Merry Christmas, Johnny Rose” and continues to pull on the viewers’ heartstrings, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t filled with laughs. Possibly the greatest image from the series—Moira Rose as a crow-woman for the movie-within-the-show “The Crowening”—comes from this season.
What really makes this season stand out is the focus on Stevie, played by Emily Hampshire. While Stevie has been a part of the show from the start, this is the year where she really got to shine, thanks in large part to her coming out of her shell and taking the lead in the town’s production of Cabaret, which also happens to be just one of the great musical moments of the series.
1 Season 6 Ended Things On Top – 8.5
Schitt’s Creek came to an end with Season 6, and it made sure to go out on top. Universally praised by fans and critics, this season doesn’t tie up everything in a neat little bow, but leaves room for life to continue for the characters as Johnny and Stevie turn the Rosebud Hotel into a chain of hotels and David and Patrick plan their wedding.
Schitt’s Creek pulled off a rare thing for a TV series; it continued to get better with every season and had a finale that made fans happy.
