Dune Poster Unites the Ensemble Cast on Arrakis | CBR

Warner Bros. Pictures dropped another poster for its upcoming sci-fi epic Dune.

The poster brings the film’s many characters together on the desert planet Arrakis, a world also referred to as “Dune.” Those pictured include Timothée Chalamet as Paul, the heir to House Atreides, as well as Paul’s parents, Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac) and Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson). Also featured are Josh Brolin as Gurney Halleck, Paul’s weapons instructor and Duke Leto’s chief officer; Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, a Swordmaster and warrior who serves the Atreides clan; Javier Bardem as Stilgar, a Fremen leader; Zendaya as Chani, a Fremen woman whose destiny becomes entangled with Paul’s; and Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Dr. Liet-Kynes, Arrakis’ chief Planetologist.

Adapting the first half of Frank Herbert’s 1965 sci-fi novel, Dune follows the members of House Atreides as they assume control of Arrakis. Since the planet is the only known source of melange or spice, a valuable substance that not only prolongs its users’ lives but imbues them with heightened senses necessary for interstellar travel, this puts House Atreides at odds with its rivals, including the powerful House Harkonnen.

Denis Villeneuve (Arrival, Blade Runner 2049) is directing Dune from an adapted script he co-wrote with Eric Roth (2018’s A Star Is Born) and Jon Spaihts (Doctor Strange), the latter of whom is already penning the sequel. Spaihts was also a writer on HBO Max’s Dune: The Sisterhood before he left the project in late 2019 to focus on scripting the second Dune movie. A spinoff series centered around the Bene Gesserit, The Sisterhood is now being overseen by showrunner Diane Ademu-John (The Haunting of Bly Manor).

Once scheduled for 2020, Dune has seen multiple delays due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Like the rest of Warner Bros.’ 2021 movies, it’s now debuting as a day-and-date release in theaters and on HBO Max. Villeneuve blasted the news in an open letter after WarnerMedia’s announcement in December 2020 and reportedly pushed for the film to be a theater-exclusive. However, with box office numbers diminishing as moviegoers stay at home over concerns about the outbreak of the COVID-19 Delta variant, Warner Bros. looks to stay the course with Dune.

Dune arrives in theaters and streams on HBO Max for a limited period starting Oct. 22.
