The world of Black Clover is one where it’s not always easy to guess who’s the good guy and who’s the bad guy. Background characters can sometimes be even less likeable than the characters intended to be villains, and some characters meant to be villains might actually have sympathetic, or at least complicated, backstories or motivations. Some may even later redeem themselves toward the story’s end.
A villain doesn’t necessarily have to be sympathetic to be likable. Some villains have their fans because of things like their design, their charisma, how well they tie a story together, or just for being well-written. Some even have a lasting impact on viewers because it’s just that much fun to dislike them.
10 Zagred: The Word Devil Is Behind A Lot Of Evil In The Story
Zagred, also known as the Word Devil, is a high-ranking devil who is behind various machinations in the series, like the massacre of the Elf Tribe and manipulating Patolli. His ultimate goal was to consume both elves and humans.
Despite his evil and sadistic nature, Zagred does have his fans thanks to his design, for being a chilling villain for the story, and making the introduction of antagonistic devils.
9 Dante Zogratis: He’s Charismatic, Albeit A Sadist & A Womanizer
Dante Zogratis is a member of the Dark Triad, as well as the host of the devil Lucifero. He appears calm and easygoing, and to some extent, this might not be a façade, as he’s been known to keep his cool in tense situations. However, this still hides his darker nature.
Dante believes that humans are inherently evil, favoring hatred and revenge. It gets to a point where he takes being called “evil” a compliment and encourages others to embrace their “humanity.” He can also be manipulative and and tends to objectify women, declaring Vanessa and Grey as belonging to him after seeing how powerful they really are. On the reverse, he thinks little of people with little mana.
8 Zenon Zogratis: There’s Just Something About His Cold, No-Nonsense Behavior
Zenon Zogratis is a member of the Dark Triad, three mages who rule over the Spade Kingdom. He is known for his lack of mercy, hiding his true bloodthirsty nature behind a cold, chilling façade. He doesn’t like to talk, preferring that his magic speaks for him, suggesting he isn’t that diplomatic.
Zenon is devoted to the Spade Kingdom, going so far as to invade the Clover Kingdom to give the Spade Kingdom the slightest advantages. While meticulous, he is also pragmatic when it comes to attacks, directly eliminating a threat instead of prolonging a fight.
7 Megicula: This Devil Uses Vanica As A Host
Megicula is a high-ranking devil. shown to be cruel and vicious, as well as whimsical. Megicula’s views on humans are complicated, seeing them as inferior to devils, but admits they can be impressive on occasion.
Megicula also has a curious nature and a thirst for knowledge, conducting experiments and showing excitement at learning new information. Megicula is willing to kill others without a second thought, but does have a good relationship with Vanica, who serves as a host.
6 Dazu: Her Meek Demeanor Hides What She’s Willing To Do
Dazu is a character with a sympathetic personality and backstory, having watched people she loved die in front of her and being looked down on because of her lack of powers.
Dazu is a meek woman, but she isn’t against doing unethical things to accomplish her goals, attacking others and even kidnapping children. As a member of the vigilante Devil Banishers, Dazu is not above sacrificing others for the sake of power.
5 Witch Queen: She’s A Literal Witch Queen With Impressive Powers
The Witch Queen rules the Witches’ Forest and is the mother of all witches. Vain and manipulative, she is willing to enslave others. She is also infamous for locking Vanessa Enoteca in a cage, hoping that this would improve her magic, but eventually allowing her to escape to come back with another power.
The Witch Queen is willing to show mercy, but at a cost, such as when she healed Asta’s arms with the hope that she would take Vanessa and Asta for herself later, all the while already using them to defend the Forest. That said, her powerful Blood Magic and her design have made her an interesting villainess.
4 Sally: She’s Unhinged & A Little Too Excitable
Sally is a rogue mage and a member of the Eye of the Midnight Sun, a group of mages planning to destroy the Clover Kingdom. Her unhinged curiosity is her primary personality trait, and she takes a particular interest in unusual magic, such as Asta’s Anti Magic or Grey’s Transformation Magic.
She likes to perform experiments, which is what caused her to join up with the Eye of the Midnight Sun in the first place. She eventually joins forces with the Clover Kingdom’s defense, especially when it means she’ll get to experiment on Asta. While she can be easily reasoned with, she also isn’t above disturbing actions when it comes to her experiments, going so far as to lick Asta.
3 Vanica Zogratis: She Is A Member Of The Dark Triad & A Devil Host
Vanica Zogratis is the third member of the Dark Triad, as well as the host of the devil Megicula. Flashy and enthusiastic, she loves a good fight, detests weakness, and her biggest pet peeve is boredom. She proves herself to be similarly heartless as the other members of the Dark Triad, and she isn’t against killing subordinates.
She’s also revealed to be the one behind cursing Acier, Noelle’s mother. Vanica’s evil actions haven’t necessarily kept her from having a fanbase, especially due to her design
2 Patolli: He Sacrificed Himself To Atone For His Sins
Patolli, also known as Patry, is an elf who lead the Eye of the Midnight Sun using Licht’s appearance. While disguised, he shows compassion to those who follow him while at the same time having a deep hatred for humans. Even contemplating humanity does not keep him from wanting to kill them.
That said, Patolli eventually learns the error of his ways and tries to atone for his past actions, going so far as a to sacrifice himself for the Clover Kingdom.
1 Liebe: He Wants To Steal Asta’s Body, But He Has A Loving Heart Deep Down
Liebe is originally a low-ranking devil who wants to take over Asta’s body in order to kill all devils. That said, his backstory is sympathetic. After having been abused in the underworld all his life, he finally found a happy life with his adoptive mother Licita – Asta’s mother – only for her to be killed by Lucifero and to get sealed away himself.
Asta sees something in Liebe, viewing his inability to kill and sadness for others as proof that Liebe is capable of love and compassion.
