Netflix has reportedly found the main cast for its live-action reboot of the beloved animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, with images surfacing of the actors said to play Aang, Katara, Sokka and Zuko.
The possible castings were shared on Avatar News, an unofficial site collecting information and speculating about developments in the TV series. The four actors named for the roles are Gordeon Cormier as Aang, Kiawentiio Tarbell as Katara, Ian Ousley as Sokka and Dallas Liu as Zuko.
The announcement explained that the casting news had not yet been officially confirmed, but was a result of independent investigation into social media connections: “Long story short, people are starting to follow each other on Instagram– actors, and confirmed crew members. After extensive research, I’m basically certain that four young actors who all started following each other, as well as following and being followed by various confirmed crew members, have been cast in the four main roles: Aang, Katara, Sokka, Zuko. The timelines match up, as do the casting calls.”
This timeline also matches up to a recent report that Avatar: The Last Airbender would soon begin filming. Although creators of the original series, creators Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, left the project over creative differences, production has continued to move along and some reports have surfaced with hints at the changes to the plot and characters that may be implemented.
Some background on each of the actors was included in Avatar News’ post as well. Cormier is 11 years old and has appeared in Netflix’s Lost in Space and in Paramount+’s The Stand. He has allegedly been cast as Aang, the 12-year-old main character of the series and both the “Avatar” and “last airbender” of its title.
Tarbell is known for her role in CBC and Netflix’s Anne with an E. Her reported role is Katara, who is 14 years old in the animated series, the same age as Tarbell herself. Ousley is 19 and is said to be playing Sokka, Katara’s 16-year-old brother. The two characters are natives of the Northern Water Tribe and become Aang’s first allies.
Finally, 20-year-old Liu is reportedly playing Zuko, who begins the series as the Fire Nation antagonist to the other three. Liu is known for PEN15 and Tekken and also has a role in the upcoming Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, alongside star Simu Liu.
No release window for Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender series has yet been announced.
