For two days, Edmonton City Hall will be renamed “The Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion,” after one of the city’s favorite sons.
As reported by Global News, the name change will be in effect over the next two days to celebrate the release of Fillion’s latest film, The Suicide Squad. “It’s great that so many Edmontonians see the humour in it and it’s been particularly exciting to see the video responses from Mr. Fillion’s co-stars on The Suicide Squad,” the city said in a press release. “We love to see Edmontonians so engaged with their city and its public places. We hope residents will keep sharing their excitement and ideas.”
The idea to change the name of the city hall grew out of a Change.org petition to name a new park in Edmonton after one of its most famous former residents. “The City of Edmonton is turning downtown parking lots into a new Central Park that doesn’t have a name yet,” the petition reads. “To honour great Edmontonian actor Nathan Fillion, we propose we build a small building on this park, and call it… ‘The Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion’.” The petition picked up more attention after a video came out in which Fillion’s The Suicide Squad co-workers promoted the idea.
“There needs to be a Nathan Fillion Civilian Pavilion somewhere,” said writer/director James Gunn in the video. “And if it exists in Edmonton, it’s far enough away that it doesn’t have to be too close to my house.” He continued, “We hope you succeed in this mission, Edmonton. More than you could possibly believe.”
Nathan Fillion was born in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada in 1971. He went on to gain attention and adoration in a number of projects, most notably the perennial cult favorite Firefly and long-running police procedural Castle. He is currently featured in The Suicide Squad as the armless and dangerous supervillain T.D.K. The film is in theaters now and available to stream on HBO Max.
