Jordan Helman, Head of Scripted Content at Hulu, said it’s completely possible more Marvel series will debut on the streaming platform in addition to the originals already planned at Hulu’s sister platform Disney+.
“Marvel continues to be an incredibly important partner and one of the biggest generators of content within the Disney ecosystem so we’re excited about the possibility of what may lie in the future with regards to the Hulu/Marvel relationship,” Helman told Deadline. While Helman admitted he has yet to engage in conversations with Marvel President Kevin Feige about future projects, he added, “Given Marvel’s place in the Disney ecosystem, it seems like an incredibly robust avenue for future projects.”
Helman’s comments came as Hulu’s only current Marvel project, the animated series M.O.D.O.K., awaits news about whether or not it will be picked up for a second season. That series was created by Jordan Blum and Patton Oswalt and stars Oswalt as the titular supervillain, who is struggling to balance business and family.
The Season 1 finale of M.O.D.O.K. (“Days of Future M.O.D.O.K.s!”), showed a past version of M.O.D.O.K. crashing his son Lou’s Bar Mitzvah in an attempt to kill his family. During the fight, MODOK shot a laser at the time gem embedded in his past self’s head and was given the chance to choose to save his family. In a dark turn of events, ultimately decided to let his family die so that he could rebuild the future world in his image.
Fans may recall that Hulu was previously the home of Marvel Television’s live-action series Runaways, which ran on the platform for three seasons. Hulu also streamed the supernatural Marvel series Helstrom, which was canceled after only one season. Additionally, two of the four Marvel animated series previously announced at Hulu — Howard The Duck and Tigra & Dazzler — were recently shut down.
Despite hitting some hiccups in regard to Marvel content, Helman revealed during the same conversation that the platform has plans to double down on original animated originals aimed at adults. Its current lineup includes hit series Solar Opposites and Crossing Swords, which Helman added “have performed in a major way.”
In the meantime, Marvel fans can head over to Disney+, where the current lineup of Marvel Studios series includes WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and Loki. Marvel Studios’ first original animated series, What If…?, is also scheduled to debut on Disney+ on Aug. 11.
