A trailer for King Knight, the new comedy from Richard Bates Jr., just materialized online as its premiere at this year’s Fantasia International Film Festival is just around the corner.
The minute-long teaser zooms its way through a rundown of the characters inhabiting the pocket of California where the story is set. The plot centers on Thorn, high priest of the local coven who must go forth from his community on a spiritual quest after Willow, his wife and the high priestess, discovers a secret from his past.
Described as “an outsider’s outsider comedy,” the film is Bates’ fifth feature and fourth film collaboration with star Matthew Gray Gubler. The director has thus far moored himself within the thriller and horror genres, helming titles like Excision and Suburban Gothic. King Knight appears to carry much over from Bates’ past work, although now would seem to be taking a comedic take with this “kooky, clever treat, decked with a wild cast that includes Nelson Franklin, Johnny Pemberton, Barbara Crampton, Ray Wise, Andy Milonakis and the voices of Aubrey Plaza and AnnaLynne McCord.”
