Guardians of the Galaxy 3’s Script Hasn’t Changed Due to Marvel’s Release Schedule

The release schedule for upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe movies has evolved in recent years thanks to events like the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. However, despite such setbacks, all the fluctuation hasn’t affected the screenplay for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, according to writer/director James Gunn.

“I’ve done a thousand drafts, like I’ve had to of everything,” Gunn said to The Hollywood Reporter. “But no, there’s nothing that has been changed according to what happened in Marvel, in terms of that timeline. Things have changed because I thought, ‘Well, this will make it a better movie.’ In fact, I’m doing that today; I’ve been working on the script this morning.’

“So I’m always playing around with little things to make the script better,” Gunn said. “But nothing has changed since I first wrote the script. But I knew the ending of Endgame, so it wasn’t like that was a mystery to me.”

While the story for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 has not been affected, the global COVID-19 pandemic forced Disney and Marvel Studios to adjust the release schedule of several films and shows in the MCU’s Phase 4, including Black Widow, WandaVision, Shang-Chi and The Legend of the Ten Rings, Eternals and more.

Though Gunn has offered up some scant details over the years, details about the plot of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 remain a mystery. It is known, though, that Gunn selected all the songs for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack and he has also said that the Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special is essential viewing for this third installment.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn and Elizabeth Debicki. The film arrives in theaters May 5, 2023.
