RUMOR: The Flash Film Pits Barry Allen Against an Evil Doppelgänger

A new rumor claims that The Flash movie will focus on Barry Allen facing an evil doppelgänger in a deviation from the Flashpoint comic book story.

According to The Direct, Barry will encounter a “Dark Flash” from another timeline. This version of Barry Allen will reportedly serve as the primary villain of the film in the place of the many antagonists featured in the comics that the movie will pull some inspiration from. In essence, the film will literalize the twist of the comic story: that Barry is actually responsible for the Flashpoint timeline, not the Reverse-Flash.

Over the years, as The Flash has changed directors numerous times on its long road to hitting theaters, it’s been slowly revealed that Flashpoint will serve as the inspiration for the film. Given the somewhat fractured continuity of the DCEU, many have assumed that the movie might serve as a reset. Regardless of what impact it will have on DC’s films moving forward, it’s been confirmed that Michael Keaton will reprise his role as Batman and serve as a mentor to Barry. By doing so, he’ll effectively replace the Thomas Wayne version of Batman from Flashpoint. It’s also been rumored that Ben Affleck’s Batman will appear in the film, but nothing has been confirmed on that front.

In the comics, Barry awakes to a world completely different from his own. Thomas Wayne is Batman, Aquaman and Wonder Woman are at war, and Barry’s mom is alive. While the hero assumes for several issues that the Reverse-Flash is the culprit, it’s revealed that Barry actually triggered the new reality when he traveled back in time to prevent his mother’s murder. Though it’s not known if any of these elements will factor into the film, it seems “Barry” will quite literally be the villain if this new rumor is true.

Last month, set photos from The Flash showed Ezra Miller talking to someone dressed in a similar manner and outfitted with a rig that implied the person’s face would be replaced with CGI. Many assumed this would be a variant of Barry from another reality. This could, in fact, be the rumored evil Flash, perhaps in a moment before he reveals his true self.

The Flashpoint story was loosely adapted on The CW’s The Flash, and the show similarly had an evil Barry variant plague the heroes at one point. The series has also featured various Flashes meeting each other, including in the “Crisis on Infinite Earths” crossover when Grant Gustin’s Flash met Miller’s version from the films.

Directed by Andy Muschetti and starring Ezra Miller, The Flash arrives in theaters Nov. 4, 2022.
