Game of Thrones’ Kit Harington Says the Show ‘Directly’ Impacted His Mental Health

Game of Thrones actor Kit Harington said the violent and intense nature of the HBO series directly impacted his mental health.

“I went through some mental health difficulties after Thrones, and during the end of Thrones, to be honest,” Harington said during an interview on Sirius XM’s The Jess Cagle Show. “I think it was directly due to the nature of the show and what I had been doing for years.”

Harington, who played Jon Snow for eight seasons on the hit HBO series, also revealed that following the series finale, he chose to take a break from acting to “concentrate” on himself, saying, “I’m really happy I did that.”

It was reported in May 2019 that Harington had checked himself into a wellness facility ahead of the Game of Thrones finale, with representatives of the actor saying that he had “decided to utilize this break in his schedule as an opportunity to spend some time at a wellness retreat to work on some personal issues.”

The 34-year-old actor said, however, that just as he decided to come back to work, the world was hit by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit. Recently, he was able to film an episode of Amazon Prime’s Modern Love, which he said he did simply for the fun of it. “It was a bit like, you don’t have to live in that intense place all the time,” Harington said. “Why don’t you do something that takes the weight off? Why don’t you do something fun?”

On top of his “fun” role with Modern Love, Harington is officially set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Dane Whitman, aka. the Black Knight, in Eternals. Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige previously stated that Harington will likely have a role in the MCU beyond Eternals, which is set to release in theaters on Nov. 5, 2021.
