Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness writer Michael Waldron said he was in communication with the team behind Spider-Man: No Way Home to make sure everything ran smoothly.
Waldron appeared on The Playlist podcast to discuss working on Loki and the new Doctor Strange film, both of which heavily feature the multiverse. But Waldron casually confirmed long-standing rumors that the MCU’s third Spider-Man film will also involve alternate worlds when the creative revealed that he kept in touch with the writers behind the film while he was penning his movie.
“Your producing teams are constantly communicating with those producing teams to make sure that you’re not screwing each other up,” Waldron said of working on Loki and Doctor Strange 2. “I had the benefit on Spider-Man: No Way Home, Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers wrote that, I was their writer’s PA on Season 5 of Community, so I can call McKenna and get bullied by him whenever I want, but also say ‘Hey, what the hell are you guys doing? Let me make sure I’m not ruining it.’ So there’s communication to the extent that the creative teams themselves, the filmmakers, the writers, whoever, can become friendly. It certainly benefits the projects.”
It’s no secret that Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige loves plucking people from the world of comedy. Like directors Anthony and Joe Russo, Waldron previously worked on NBC’s Community. As he mentions, he wasn’t alone. Chris McKenna served as a writer on the show before tackling the scripts for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Ant-Man and the Wasp, and Spider-Man: Far From Home with writing partner Erik Sommers, who was a producer on the sitcom. The pair also penned No Way Home, which Doctor Strange will appear in.
Aside from Strange, Alfred Molina will return as Doctor Octopus and Jamie Foxx as Electro. If that weren’t enough, rumors have claimed Andrew Garfield, Kirsten Dunst, Willem Dafoe, and Tobey Maguire will also reprise their roles from previous Spider-Man films. With all that in mind and knowing that Waldron was in touch with McKenna and Sommers, it shouldn’t be a shock when the next Spider-Man film involves Peter Parker traversing the multiverse.
Spider-Man: No Way Home swings into theaters Dec. 17, 2021. Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness slings into theaters March 25, 2022.
