Riverdale creator and showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa stated that Archie Andrews and Betty Cooper’s relationship will be given more depth when Season 5 returns to The CW.
While speaking to TVLine, Aguirre-Sacasa was asked what fans could expect from Archie and Betty in the second half of Season 5, since Archie broke off their relationship and called it a booty call. “LOL. That’s fair,” Aguirre-Sacasa said. “But I will add: Betty and Archie’s story isn’t over yet, and their relationship does deepen, especially as we enter the last stretch of episodes.”
Aguirre-Sacasa previously touched on the relationship between the two characters, saying that they are “wrestling with what they mean to each other.” He said, “I mean, they’re childhood friends, it’s not just booty calls with them.”
Riverdale‘s lengthy hiatus began on March 31, with Season 5, Episode 10, “Chapter Eighty-Six: The Pincushion Man” as the midseason finale. The show was also recently renewed for Season 6, which will premiere Tuesday, Nov. 16 after fellow The CW series The Flash. In addition, Season 5 of Riverdale will see the return of Josie and the Pussycats in an episode appropriately called “Chapter Ninety-One: The Return of the Pussycats,” which will be Episode15 of the fifth season. Josie, of course, was last seen as one of the main characters in Riverdale‘s short-lived spinoff Katy Keene.
Riverdale returns to The CW on Aug. 11.
