Soul Eater: The 5 Most Powerful Weapons (& 5 Characters Who Don’t Need Them)

Nearly every inch of the Soul Eater universe is dripping with color, charm, and creativity. From the striking art style that holds up even as time goes on to the colorfully well-developed characters who inhabit the world, every aspect is given a depth of care that’s hard not to marvel at, even today. And while bits and pieces of the show’s sense of humor can be hit-or-miss, it’s easy to overlook that with everything else Soul Eater‘s got going for it.

This is especially true when it comes to the combat system within the world. There are weapons — humans who can transform part or all of their bodies into all manner of different armaments — along with the skilled meisters who wield them. There are also characters who either posses their own unique power, and thus don’t require a weapon, or meisters in such a league of their own that they can stand their ground even without one.

10 Most Powerful: Spirit May Be A Womanizer, But His Prowess As A Death Scythe Is Unmatched

Spirit’s actual personality is at the bottom of the list when ranking characters in the series. He claims to love his daughter and wife more than anything, but it’s his womanizing tendencies that drive them away from him in the first place, and he continues to betray their trust throughout the course of the series.

Despite this, he’s still one of the most powerful weapons in the entire series. The show states multiple times that this is mostly due to Maka’s mom’s natural talent and hard work to make him such a powerful force. He’s Lord Death’s right-hand scythe when things go wrong.

9 Doesn’t Need Them: Blair’s Cat-Witch Magic Is Strong Enough That Maka And Soul Only Beat Her By Tricking Her

Blair is an incredibly powerful magic-user, and the very first antagonist viewers are introduced to. She ends up becoming more of a neutral character who hangs around Maka and Soul after she’s defeated by them, which is only possible because they trick her into lowering her guard.

Although she looks like one, she’s actually not a Witch like some other magic-users in the series. She tells Maka and Soul that she’s just a cat with a ridiculous amount of magical power.

8 Most Powerful: Tsubaki Is A Powerful And Versatile Weapon Who Carries Black Star Early On

Although Tsubaki is still quite young, she’s an immensely powerful weapon who’s also the most versatile seen within the series. She can transform into various weapon types, including a smoke bomb, a chain scythe, and a shuriken, and later inherits the power of the Uncanny Sword, which is so powerful her meister can’t even wield it at first. It’s noted by Mifune that the only reason Black Star originally could survive against him whatsoever was because of just how strong Tsubaki is.

7 Doesn’t Need Them: Medusa’s Wildly Powerful Magic Makes Her A Gigantic Threat Throughout The Series

Medusa is one of the first main threats introduced within the series, and for good reason. She’s a ridiculously powerful Witch with the ability to attack using the magic snakes tattooed on her body, which can be used offensively, for tracking, or to control others.

She also holds a position within the Academy as an undercover nurse, granting her close access to the students and making her all the more dangerous. She’s even able to go toe-to-toe with Stein, the best meister to ever graduate, while he’s wielding Spirit.

6 Most Powerful: Due To Medusa’s Experimentation, Crona And Ragnarok Are An Incredibly Powerful Threat

Although Crona themself technically isn’t a weapon, their soul is one and the same with Ragnarok, who’s a weapon of intensely powerful caliber. Ragnarok’s Screech Resonance is able to disable opponents from a vast distance, and the two of them were able to easily wipe out an entire church full of gang members.

Combining this with Crona’s Black Blood, which comes out to be used as a dangerous defensive weapon when Crona is injured, they’re a near-unstoppable pair. Maka was only able to compete with Crona by succumbing to the Black Blood’s madness herself.

5 Doesn’t Need Them: Although He Sometimes Uses One, Stein Is A Powerhouse All On His Own

Stein is the most powerful meister to ever graduate from the Academy. He has the ability to match his Soul Wavelength with any weapon he’s interested in, the only character within the anime who’s able to do this. When Black Star tries to use Soul and Maka tries using Tsubaki, the mismatched weapons burn their hands, as their wavelengths aren’t compatible.

However, Stein’s so powerful that he doesn’t even need a weapon to be able to fight all on his own. He can shoot blasts of his Soul Wavelength out of his hands to attack, which is something that’s near impossible to do without a weapon for all but the most gifted.

4 Most Powerful: Despite Justin’s Personality Quirks, He’s One Of The Most Capable Death Scythes

Justin comes off as a rather odd individual, and that’s taking into account how quirky most of the main cast members can be. He has a tendency to keep his headphones in no matter what, which can make it appear as if he doesn’t listen to others, but he can actually read lips perfectly.

However, he’s actually immensely powerful, as he’s another one of the few death scythes fans are introduced to in the anime. He cares deeply about the Academy and will show no mercy to those who threaten it, and he actually has a rather cocky and taunting side while in combat.

3 Doesn’t Need Them: Arachne Is A Witch Who Possesses Even More Power Than Medusa

It makes sense that Arachne wouldn’t have to make use of magic weapons in order to be a threat — after all, she’s the Witch responsible for creating them in the first place.

Arachne is Medusa’s older sister and another immensely powerful witch. She was too strong for Maka and Soul to handle, even with the help of Crona and Ragnarok. Similar to Medusa, she also has magic minions within her that she can summon at will, except she uses spiders instead of snakes.

2 Most Powerful: Despite His Unbearable Personality, Excalibur Is The World’s Greatest Weapon

Excalibur Soul Eater

There are multiple instances of characters seeking the Holy Sword Excalibur throughout the series, but his personality is too unbearable for any of them to stick with him for long, if at all. His combat abilities are rarely shown, but he’s noted to be in an entirely different league than even the death scythes.

Whoever wields him is able to bathe the entire area around the Holy Sword in a brilliant light and gains the power of instant teleportation. Black Star, Kid, Hero, and a young Professor Stein are all seen seeking the sword, but none of them are able to deal with his eccentricity.

1 Doesn’t Need Them: Asura Wields Intense Magical Power And Swallowed His Own Weapon Partner

Asura is the final villain of the anime, and for good reason. The embodiment of fear itself, Asura possessed an incredibly potent Madness Wavelength that could make those susceptible to it succumb to mental decline, as seen with Professor Stein.

By swallowing his own weapon partner, he gained not only his partner’s power, but the ability to swallow other souls and gain theirs as well. This, combined with his immortality, immense strength, and extremely quick reflexes, made him an incredibly deadly opponent.
