Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans – What Heroes Die | CBR

WARNING: The following contains spoilers for Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, now streaming on Netflix.

Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans lives up to its billing of raising the stakes to unfathomable levels as the Arcane Order raises three Titans to destroy Earth. It unites all the heroes from the Trollhunters, 3Below and Wizards series as these golems are pretty much unstoppable. Luckily, Jim and his heroic crew improvise and figure out how the stop the villains, but it costs them quite a few lives.

Nomura

Initially, Nomura was a changeling who sided with Gunmar and Bular, the evil trolls that made Jim’s life a living hell. She was a spy working at Arcadia’s museum, but in time, she’d be redeemed and join the heroes, realizing magic shouldn’t be used to destroy. Unfortunately, she meets a dark fate when Nari, the Earth elemental, is brainwashed by the other Arcane Order gods. Nari raises the Earth Titan in Brazil, and as Douxie and Nomura try to snap her out of the trance, Douxie’s knocked off the behemoth. Luckily, Nomura has her mystical sickles to cling to the giant, but as she leaps to slice up Nari, the elemental uses vines to wrap up Nomura. This drains her life essence and breaks her into several pieces of stone.

Walter

Walter was also one of Jim’s earliest enemies, but in time, he became a mentor and father-figure, as he’s now engaged to Jim’s mom, Barbara, vowing to protect their family at all costs. Sadly, after Skrael raises the Ice Titan from Greenland, Jim insists they go after it despite him not having his Trollhunter amulet, armor and powers. It’s risky, so Walter turns into his changeling form and flies Jim out for battle, but they crash as Walter’s wings freeze. He realizes it’s a suicide mission, so he leaves Jim behind to care for Barb, reminding him how much he loves them. Walter then flies into the Titan and blows up, but despite the sacrifice, the ice shards reunite to reform the frigid giant, leaving Walter’s death in vain.

Nari

Later on, Douxie connects to Nari’s mind and remind her of their vow to stop running. She snaps out of the brainwashing and uses the Earth golem to fight Skrael’s ice giant. It’s a brutal battle, but it concludes with both Titans impaling each other with lethal stabs. Seeing as they’re connected to the elementals as avatars, they share each other’s life forces, so once a Titan dies, the elemental does too. Skrael crumbles to ice bits while Nari crumbles to dirt. It’s a horrific fatality that takes out two Titans, and it leaves Douxie broken as he loved Nari.

Charlemagne and Archie

Charlemagne, Claire and Archie head to China’s TrollMarket and breach the mystical border and steal the Khronisfere from the TrollDragon, Zong-Shi. Unfortunately, as they flee, it results in the dragon’s trolls attacking them. Jim and co. arrive to pull them out, but the stone used to make the gateway has cracked. As a result, Archie and his dad are left behind, making it clear they’re up for the sacrifice. Granted, viewers never see them die, and they both remark how they’d love to rule this empire, but seeing as it’s an entire kingdom’s legion and a dragon bearing down, it’s heavily implied they die, as they never appear again.

Toby

When Jim gets back his powers, he battles Bellroc on the Fire Titan. Still, the dark god is able to stab Jim and seems poised for the kill until Toby uses a reactor the Akiridions helped him build. It nullifies magic, and he creates a wave that depowers Bellroc, allowing Jim to use Excalibur to kill the villain. As the Titan, without a pilot, falls to the ground, it crushes Toby’s van. Jim finds his buddy dying, but Toby reminds him the sacrifice is worth it. He promised to be by Jim’s side until the end, whether it’s playing in Arcadia or saving the world, and he passes on in a heroic finale.

It leaves Jim bereaved since Toby was his best friend and helped him become the Trollhunter from the start of the series. This death, as well as the others, are truly heartbreaking, and they can be seen in Netflix’s Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans, which is based on Guillermo del Toro’s Tales of Arcadia trilogy series.
