The first person to wear the Iron Man armor that wasn’t Tony Stark was Happy Hogan. During a story where there was suspicion that Tony Stark was actually Iron Man, Happy Hogan decided to suit up in the armor to make people believe there was no way the two of them could be the same person.

The first run-in Iron Man had with Justin Hammer came when Hammer figured out a way to hack his armor, using it to kill a foreign dignitary. Promising to not wear the armor as a show of good faith, Stark had to go figure out who was hacking his armor and get proof. But without the armor, he was forced to learn how to actually learn self-defense.
So he went to the best man he knew: Captain America. And thus, in Iron Man Vol. 1 #125, Captain America taught Tony Stark the basics of how to defend himself without armor, which is enough to get by against the average henchman but no one too high-level.
