Warhammer 40K: Darktide Delayed to 2022 | CBR

Game developer Fatshark delayed the release of Warhammer 40,000: Darktide to spring 2022.

Fatshark released a statement on Twitter confirming that its upcoming grimdark cooperative shooting game will not launch in 2021 as intended. Darktide was originally expected to release sometime in 2021 but, according to the team at Fatshark, the challenges of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic impacted the game’s development enough to warrant a delay.

“We have a responsibility to deliver the best game we possibly can, and frankly we need more time to accomplish this goal. It’s no secret that building a game during a pandemic is a challenge and we are not immune to this,” said Fatshark CEO and Co-Founder Martin Wahlund. “We are planning to use the extra time to both focus on the level of quality at release, as well as invest in more systems to support Darktide for years to come.”

The announcement expressed the team’s eagerness to get Darktide into the hands of players, but like with many other recently-delayed projects, the consequences of the pandemic managed to hamper the game’s production.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is a highly-anticipated collaboration between Fatshark, a developer of previous Warhammer games, and longtime franchise writer Dan Abnett. The gameplay will resemble the Fatshark-helmed Vermintide series, which focused on first-person co-op action in the style of games like Left 4 Dead.

However, Darktide places a heavier emphasis on shooting mechanics than Vermintide and will tell a new story in which players take on the role of human Inquisitors fending off an invasion from the Admonition cult. The game is intended to launch exclusively on PC and Xbox Series X|S.

Darktide is not the first game to be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Capcom recently announced Resident Evil Re:Verse will miss its anticipated July 2021 release window and is now expected to launch sometime in 2022. Tango Gameworks also cited the pandemic as a primary reason for the delay of Ghostwire: TokyoLike with Darktide, Tango stated Ghostwire is now slated for release in “early” 2022.

Barring another delay, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide, developed and published by Fatshark, will launch in spring 2022 for Xbox Series X|S and PC.
