Scream: Ghostface Returns in New (Deleted) Image | CBR

A new, now deleted, image from Scream 5 gave fans a look at the return of Ghostface.

Greg Russell, sound mixer for the upcoming Scream 5, posted a since-deleted photo on Instagram of himself and the post-production team from inside the studio. The behind-the-scenes image features a closeup of the Ghostface Killer in his iconic mask, the latest version of the franchise’s central villain.

While Ghostface has been prominently featured in the promotional material for the fifth installment of the Scream franchise, this is the first glimpse of how the killer will appear in the upcoming film, an appearance that hasn’t changed much since the original 1996 slasher. The identity of Ghostface has been kept tightly under wraps even from the actors, who were each given differing scripts on set in order to keep the Woodsboro killer’s identity a mystery. Original Scream director Wes Craven did something similar while directing his horror films, often filming additional scenes in order to keep his actors unsure of the film’s major reveal.

Scream will see the return of Neve Campbell as Sydney Prescott, who has starred in every film in the franchise, as well as fellow Scream alums Courteney Cox as Gale Weathers and David Arquette as Sheriff Dewey Riley. The film reportedly follows a woman who “returns to her hometown to try to find out who has been committing a series of violent crimes.”

The fifth Scream film, simply titled Scream, has been described by cast and crew as a relaunch rather than a sequel and is the first film in the franchise not directed by Craven, who passed in August 2015. Directed by Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett, Scream arrives in theaters Jan. 14, 2022.
