William Shatner Doesn’t Like JJ Abrams’ Star Trek Films’ Use of Nimoy’s Spock

William Shatner, the original Captain James T. Kirk, did not approve of Leonard Nimoy’s appearances as Spock in JJ Abrams Star Trek films.

“Leonard Nimoy was in some of those films, but it was totally gratuitous,” said Shatner in an interview with Express.co.uk, while promoting his new movie Senior Moment. “They just wanted to put Spock in there and I didn’t admire that.”

Despite his disapproval of the use of his friend and co-star in Abrams’ films, Shatner is open to reprising his role in a future Star Trek property.

“Y’know, Star Trek is a marvelous show. How it’s lasted all these years, why it has all these iterations, I don’t know,” Shatner said. “I spend the time speculating why Star Trek has been and is so popular. In fact, nobody really knows. So I would be delighted to be a part of Star Trek if it was something worthy. If they could come up with a way of putting a character I played in a movie where it functioned as a point in the movie [and] made the movie move along, I’d be delighted.”

This is not a new revelation on Shatner’s part, as the actor has expressed interest in playing Captain Kirk again in a possible Star Trek film helmed by director Quentin Tarantino. When asked if he would star, Shatner said, “Absolutely, absolutely. He’s wonderful.”

Abrams rebooted the Star Trek film franchise in 2009 with Star Trek, starring Chris Pine as James T. Kirk, originally played by Shatner in the 1966 series, Zoe Saldana as Uhura and Zachary Quinto as Spock. 2009’s Star Trek placed the crew of the USS Enterprise in an alternate reality, retelling the story of how they all met.

Nimoy, who passed away in 2015, reprised his role as Spock Prime in Star Trek (2009), who traveled to this alternate reality from the original Star Trek timeline. He also appeared as Spock Prime in Star Trek: Into Darkness in 2013 for a brief cameo, which would be his final film appearance.
