Evangelion 3.333’s 4K Blu-ray Release Includes a ‘Making-of’ Special Feature

The upcoming home video release of Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo comes with a “making-of” special feature that chronicles how the third film in the Rebuild of Evangelion tetralogy was reshot in 4K.

Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo is slated to be released on 4K Ultra-HD Blu-ray in Japan on Wednesday, Aug. 25. Per Crunchyroll, the disc includes the aforementioned “making-of” feature, which shows “the process of capturing the footage again under the watchful eye of creator Hideaki Anno, as well as the image boards from designer Mahiro Maeda.”

The 4K UHD Blu-ray release of Evangelion 3.333 includes a number of other special features, including all of the bonus material that was on the previous 3.33 release, the trailers for 3.333 and a digital copy of the film’s recording script. Various retailers are also offering an array of bonus items to those who purchase the Blu-ray in Japan.

Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo is the third and penultimate entry in Rebuild of Evangelion, a film tetralogy that acts as a retelling of the original Neon Genesis Evangelion anime created by Hideaki Anno. You Can (Not) Redo originally released in Japanese theaters on Nov. 17, 2012. The film later received a home video release under the title Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo, which made its way to North America on DVD and Blu-ray in early 2016.

You Can (Not) Redo returned to theaters in Japan earlier this year on Jan. 8 under the new title Evangelion: 3.333 You Can (Not) Redo, which — through technology that was not available back in 2012 — had been completely recaptured in 4K under Anno’s supervision. While the overall story of Evangelion 3.0 was not changed, the Evangelion 3.333 re-release did alter certain scenes and visuals in order be more in line with Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time.

The fourth and final film in the Rebuild of Evangelion series, Thrice Upon a Time hit theaters in Japan on March 8 — two months after Evangelion 3.333. An updated version of the movie, titled Evangelion: 3.0+1.01 Thrice Upon a Time, was released in Japanese theaters another three months later on June 12. Evangelion 3.0+1.01 is currently slated for a streaming release in 240 countries and territories outside of Japan via Amazon Prime Video on Friday, Aug. 13.
