Black Adam‘s Sarah Shahi revealed she had no idea she was auditioning for the upcoming DC Extended Universe film.
While speaking to THR, Shahi was asked if the casting process for Black Adam was an exhaustive one. “You know what? I actually tanked the audition for Sex/Life, and I had to put myself on tape five times,” Shahi replied. “So Sex/Life was probably the hardest casting process I’ve ever been in, whereas Black Adam was the easiest casting process. The universe definitely gave me a little kiss on the cheek when I got this one.”
Shahi added that while she was filming Sex/Life, she “put [herself] on tape in Toronto” for the movie, which she knew nothing about, including the title.
“So I auditioned with two very nondescript scenes, and then the world shut down,” she continued. “So the next thing I knew, I got a phone call, saying, ‘Remember that movie you went out on?’ and I couldn’t really remember because it was a couple of months after I auditioned. But they said, ‘Well, they want to meet with you, and it’s this project called Black Adam with Dwayne Johnson.’ And it just sounded so surreal. It sounded like I was being pranked or something. It just didn’t sound real.”
While little is known about the plot of Black Adam, Shahi seemingly confirmed earlier this year that she would be playing the character of Adrianna Tomaz/Isis in the film, with some recent plot details describing the character as “a university professor and freedom fighter leading the resistance in Kahndaq.” The movie will also introduce the Justice Society of America, who may gain their own team film if Black Adam is well-received.
Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, Black Adam stars Dwayne Johnson, Noah Centineo, Aldis Hodge, Pierce Brosnan, Quintessa Swindell, Pierce Brosnan, Mo Amer, Marwan Kenzari, Bodhi Sabongui, James Cusati-Moyer, Sarah Shahi and Uli Latukefu. The film arrives in theaters July 29, 2022.
