James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad will finally give Harley Quinn a superpower — in a sense.
During a set visit attended by ScreenRant and other outlets, the team behind the film was asked about Harley’s latest appearance in the DCEU and how it will differ from previous films. One major change will be giving Harley a sort of superpower based on her unique way of seeing and moving through the world.
“So it’s an idea that we’re going to explore, and we’ll see how it’s executed,” production designer Beth Mickle said. “But the idea is that there is a ‘Harley Vision,’ like how she sees the world and how she sees things, and it’s possibly with animated flowers and tweety birds. She’s very happy, so we explored some concept art to see what that could look like, and how we would render it in the film. Just used sparingly, but I think effectively.”
“Just the juxtaposition of that look, with an incredibly violent action scene that is occurring at the same time as part of her escape,” producer Peter Safran added about the technique, which can be glimpsed not only in Harley’s character poster but a striking scene from the Suicide Squad trailer.
It’s not clear if this way of seeing things in any way helps Harley during combat or if it’s merely a way for the filmmakers to visualize her unique perspective, but it’s certainly an original addition to the character that’s yet to appear in any other media.
Written and directed by James Gunn, The Suicide Squad stars Viola Davis as Amanda Waller, Joel Kinnaman as Rick Flag, Michael Rooker as Savant, Flula Borg as Javelin, David Dastmalchian as Polka-Dot Man, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher 2, Idris Elba as Bloodsport, Mayling NG as Mongal, Peter Capaldi as The Thinker, Alice Braga as Solsoria, Sylvester Stallone as King Shark, Pete Davidson as Blackguard, Nathan Fillion as TDK, Sean Gunn as Weasel, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang and John Cena as Peacemaker, with Steve Agee, Taika Waititi and Storm Reid.
