Black Widow Featurette Shows How Dangerous the MCU’s New Supervillain Is

A new featurette for Marvel’s Black Widow introduces viewers to the new villain Taskmaster and shows how dangerous he truly is.

“I was really excited about Taskmaster being this formidable opponent,” director Cate Shortland said in the video. Scarlett Johansson added, “As soon as Natasha starts to experience the Taskmaster’s fighting style, she’s at a loss.” Clips from the featurette highlight the villain holding his own against both Black Widow and the super-soldier Red Guardian, played by David Harbour.

“He has the ability to mimic other characters’ moves,” Harbour explained. “From Captain America, Black Panther, [or] Hawkeye.” Rachel Weisz concluded, “When you watch him, I think you feel like he’s the ultimate secret weapon.” It’s still unknown at this time what actor will be playing the role of Black Widow’s Taskmaster.

Taskmaster (real name Tony Masters) is a mercenary with the power of “photographic reflexes,” i.e. the ability to instantly duplicate any movement he sees. This ranges from advanced fighting styles to playing the guitar. However, having to keep track of so many different moves has caused him to forget his own identity and backstory prior to becoming a mercenary. Taskmaster often works as a training instructor to various criminal organizations, as well as a regular threat the Avengers and other heroes must face.

Directed by Cate Shortland, Black Widow stars Scarlett Johansson as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow, Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova, David Harbour as Alexei Shostakov/Red Guardian, O-T Fagbenle as Mason and Rachel Weisz as Melina Vostokoff. The film arrives in theaters and on Disney+ Premier Access July 9.
